ANZ Wants to Charge Card Anual Fee That Was Supposed to Be Free

Hi, I applied for an ANZ credit card because of a cashback deal I saw on Ozbargain. I don't remember which promotion it was exactly as this was many months ago. I believe it was the "spend 500 and get 200 back" promotion. I believe the first year fee was waived.

The thing is I want to cancel the card but they told me I can't without paying the annual fee. They offered to waive the first year fee and I would be able to cancel the card at the end of that year.
This sounds like a scam, they are not getting a dollar from me under their offer but it is highly probable that I will forget to cancel the card after the fee waived year and I will have to pay for the following year.

Is there any way I can get the card cancelled now without paying the fee?

Thanks

dont get why the downvotes. I have to pay around 90 dollars to cancel the card now. I apreciate his suggestion but obviously is the option Im trying to avoid.

Did they explain why you can't cancel now without paying the annual fee? It doesn't sound right. When will you hit your one year with them? I would chase it up and query them again. I have dealt with ANZ contact centre people and have received inconsistent advice, so perhaps try again?

    • I asked 2 times already and was told the same thing

    • "spend 500 and get 200 back"

guess that's probably why with T&C.
Can't eat free lunch then do a runner.

    • for credit card, I have the feeling that most fees are pro rata.
ie even if you do not cancel it on the exact date but later, they will refund you the rest of unused portion.
being an OZB, I don't have pay fee cards anymore, so may not be up to date.

Accept the fee free year then put a calendar reminder on every device you own to cancel before the following year is charged.

    • This.
They don't want you to cancel, obviously. So they are prolonging your stay, hoping you either decide to keep it, or forget to cancel. Just don't forget!

      • exactly. But im worried I might forget and hate to have pending things to do. That's why I'm asking if there is a way to cancel right now.

  • If you were promised something over the phone, ask them to retrieve and listen to the historical calls.

    • I was not promised anything on the phone. I read a post on Ozbargain and I believe it said first year fees waived. But if you want to cancel beforehand they want to charge the fee. I could wait for the whole year to pass and cancel, but I risk forgetting that day. I really dont want to have a pending thing to do. If it can be cancelled right now, I will just do it.

Perhaps there is an Udemy memory course on special?

  • Where does it say in the terms and conditions that you can't cancel before the anniversary date without incurring a fee? Can anyone find it?

Always keep good records. I have a hanging file that I keep on each CC that I apply for. Full Offer details, & T & C's.
I just rang & cancelled an ANZ CC yesterday, and they suggested that I keep it for the full first year as it was annual fee free first year. No Thanks!!
Also when they asked why I was cancelling I quoted the overseas transaction/surcharge/exchange rate fees!!
