Travel Insurance for South Africa Please

Hi,

I'm looking for travel insurance for an urgent trip to South Africa leaving Australia on Wednesday. I've been looking online and honestly it is confusing!

Who do you recommend? Costs vary from $75 - $180 for a single trip.

Please share your suggestions.

Thank you.

    Will you be going to District 9?

    • Hahaha, no. I am going to see my gravely ill father.

        Okies, I'll wind back on the humour…I hope he's feeling better soon, and I'm sure a visit from his daughter will be a fantastic prescription! :)

        Back on topic though, I've had nothing but good experiences with CoverMore insurance, their premiums are very competitive (apparently even cheaper thru Aussie Post) and on the few claims we've had to make they've never made the process onerous or unfair, and we've never been left out of pocket!

        • Thank you. Just about to look at CoverMore insurance. Given the destination some offer hijacking as part of the premium.

          Update: Covermore came out at $158! I'm too expensive to insure.

          @AussieDolphin: Yup, car/hi-jacking is a genuine concern in SA…one of my mates got shot in the arse (I kid you not) by a carjacker in J-burg! ;)

          @StewBalls:

          I can believe it. I used to live in South Africa. My brother was hijacked twice but not shot. I won't be hiring a car as I don't feel safe driving over there.

  • Do you a credit card from some major banks ? Just activate the Free International Travel Insurance, problem solved :}

    • Hi Marcsie, I don't have a credit card. I paid for my flight with a visa debit card.

    The different costs will be to do with the cost of the excess and level of cover.

    If you have a high level credit card you may also be able to just activate it's insurance.

    I normally use cover more.

    Good on you for thinking about this instead of skimping out on it.

  • Travel Insurance, don't leave home without it :)

    Have you tried Travel Insurance Direct? They are generally pretty cheap and provide reasonable cover (i normally use them including when I was in South Africa last). Usually can find a discount code as well for a further discount (TIDTHANKS normally works for 5-10% off).

    All the best with your Dad.

    • Thank you :). Checking it out now.

    • It came out at $108.20. That includes a 5% discount.

        How does the inclusions with TID compare with the cheapest one you calculated previously (the $75 one)?

        Around $100 sounds about right.

    I've used Downunder Insurance (http://www.duinsure.com.au) for about 15 years for overseas trips including US and SA. They offer great service with queries etc.

      Thanks for sharing. Think I might go with Plan A - Comprehensive International. Which option do you suggest for South Africa? Waiving the excess increases my premium from $102 to $135.

        I use Plan C for all destinations except US (high medical) and SA (higher risk). So I would go with Plan A and waive premium. Hope your father's health improves.

          PS Their price bands are 5, 10, 17, 24, 35, 45 days. I generally buy 10 day cover if I'm going for 7 days, just in case.
