Considerations When Purchasing DJI Osmo Mobile

With the likes of tools such as the Osmo Mobile, and the super good quality cameras on phones, it has become scarily easy to get into video editing/vlogging. I love the concept - I love watching youtube vids of people's holidays and their events.

So I've got a few thoughts I want to share (and some questions).

  • I've got zero experience in video editing and mildly average knowledge of computers
  • I love the concept of vlogging
  • I'm considering purchasing an Osmo Mobile. I currently use a SG S7 Edge. I've heard that there's problems with Osmo and S7 Edge. Can anyone weigh in on this?
  • Anything I need to know about video editing before I buy a ~ $2000 laptop, ~$500 gimbal?
  • Is it too much of a hassle to film while on holidays? Do vloggers just make it look easy?

Thanks - Just want to hear from others really…

    look up snoppa m1

    might be worth a punt…..

  • if you want to start vlogging because you love it, go ahead by all means. If you want to start vlogging to make money, keep in mind that it's hours and hours of hard work with a lot of failed attempts before you succeed if at all.

That being said, video editing is pretty easy if you don't want to do much with color grading and advanced features (which you wouldn't anyways if you shoot with the phone). Trimming videos and arranging them into a timeline of your liking is pretty standard so you won't have a lot of trouble there. You'll need high end hardware if you do 4K video editing but if most of your shoots are in 1080p, you can get away with a mid range gig.

Good luck mate, remember to have fun regardless, that's the most important part :)

    • Thanks heaps. I plan to do all recording in 4k to future proof myself. My next post was going to be "which laptop is best for video ediitng" because I am aware that there's definitely an investment that needs to be made into good hardware.

Any idea how much I can expect to pay for a good laptop fit for this purpose? $1500? $2000?

      Thanks heaps!

      • be warned, 4K definitely needs a fair bit of processing power. A GPU would help and while I don't like it, OS X seems to have software that works better (Final Cut Pro) than what's available for Windows (Davinci Resolve, Premiere etc).

        • Hmm..Thanks for the input. I think that much is enough to convince me to stick to 1080P… Any idea how much I would need to pay for a decent laptop? 256 SSD, good graphics, plenty of ram, decent battery - It will NOT be used for gaming.

@unistudent1: wait for a deal, TA recently posted a good thinkpad for around 700 I think, you'll have to get a SSD which should cost you around 120 so if you spot a good deal, I think you can do with 800-ish. They don't come with a dedicated GPU but that shouldn't matter for 1080p editing. I think 4K will takes 2+ years to become mainstream. FYI: I shoot 4K but I watch that sh*t in a 1080p monitor lol ;)

        • @enzioFirenze: Yeah, i noticed htat one. I was so close to jumping on it. But I wasn't sure if I wanted to invest $500 into an osmo mobile and hence wasn't sure if I need the added specs.

But thanks heaps for your contribution. So far my plan is to jump on the Snoppa M1. Delivery is Early March next year - I'm just waiting till some more "cement" updates come through from the manufacturer.

          Thanks

        • @unistudent1: ah the M1, it looks decent but I'm not quite sure. If you want a cheaper alternative, you can always get a steady cam mount. It should also do a decent job. I personally shoot with Xiaomi Yi 4K and GoPro Hero 5 for various reasons but S7E should do a good job too.

        • @enzioFirenze: I have a spare SLR laying around. I once borrowed a mate's ~$300 steady cam type thing. Wasn't quick and easy. Wasn't seamless. Too much balancing and weighing etc etc.

The M1 has me sold. A bunch of young tech guys executing in a professional way - Doesn't appear to have the stigma of "shi*ty chinese quality stuff". It seems decent.

Anywho, thanks for the insight. Much appreciated

        • @unistudent1: DJI is Chinese company too. Not all Chinese products are bad.

    • I prefer 1080p 60fps rather than 4k 30fps for smartphone because it's smoother

I was tempted with the Snoppa M1 too, but I couldn't find much information on whether they'll have the app for Android or just iOS at this point.

    • It's crowdfunding. Project can even fail. It's like investment. U can pay now for cheaper price. If it turns out not suitable for your need, you can sell

You're right, I guess at this point only time can tell. I wish that they are successful as this will (hopefully) level the playing field a little in terms of pricing. I'm currently testing the Osmo Mobile, great as it is, but lacking in some features on their Android app
