American Express Platinum Edge free travel insurance question

So I booked flights using my AMEX card without any seat allocation. The next day I decided I wanted seating allocation so I paid for this using Poli (bank account) with jetstar. I am wondering if this means i'll still be covered with the travel insurance? I called up amex but they couldn't give me a straight answer, all they said was "the entire fee has to be paid with amex". Anyone know?

  • Should be fine. Usually its just a minimum spend you need to make that is spent on flights or accommodation.
I doubt that using another payment method for what is essentially an upgrade would negate that.
Does that also mean that if you buy a sandwich on board you lose your insurance too :P
If you really want to be sure, phone your card supplier back and talk to a different helpdesk monkey and see if they are more helpful.
    Have a good trip :)

I would look at it as this. You paid the full fare using Amex. This is what they require as stated in the PDS

    1. ELIGIBILITY & ACTIVATION OF INSURANCE BENEFITS
Important: In order to be eligible for the complimentary insurance benefits, You must first purchase the full fare for a return Trip, or an Eligible Item, on the American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card Account

It doesn't mention seating. You are on the flight whether you pay for seating or otherwise. Just like if you paid for drinks or meal extras.

If it came to claiming, I couldn't see how they could wiggle out of it.

  • Doubt it would affect. And realistically they would have no idea that you paid anything additional afterwards - you would have an invoice (before the seating) showing 100% of the fee is paid and they would see the same amount on your credit card statement.

  • Thanks for the replies. That's a relief.
