Excessive LPG Price in Coles Express Service Stations

I noticed that the price of LPG in Coles Express Service Stations around Brisbane has been increased to uncompetitive levels.
Most Coles Express around Brisbane are now selling LPG at 79.9 c/l.
Yet some nearby servos are selling it as low as $59.9 c/l (Caltex Woolworths for example).
It is a huge difference.
Have people noticed that in other areas?
Is Coles Express planning to stop selling LPG?

Coles Express just charge whatever they like as they know the sheep will still flock there to save their 4 cents a litre.

I don't buy LPG so can't comment on my area, but my local regularly has ULP at 6-8 cents higher than the 7-11 down the road.

    • +1. Filled ULP @ 108.5 today at 7Eleven the Coles accross the road was $116.9 I have been looking at petrol prices lately and almost always Coles is higher than everyone else.

Funny how they can't stop harping about how Caltex is "Milking it" by selling Oak for a $1 more when they can just make that on about 11L of fuel. Just saying :D

I have always bought LPG from Coles Express and the price has always been in line with closeby servos. Now they are totally out (+30%). No 4c/l dockets can compensate.
I have not bought from Coles Express for at least 4 weeks now.

  • Yes.

In Sydney, we have real time online fuel prices and most Coles ones are ~75c/L. Filled up today at an independent down the road at 59.9

More concerning is that I have been to multiple Coles servos where they no longer sell LPG and the pump has been removed. Went in and out of 2 coles Servos before I gave up (trying to use up a Coles gift card).

Cant say for LPG, but for unleaded Coles is always higher than my local woolies, BP or 7-11. Only if you use the 4c docket at coles will it bring it down to the price elsewhere (even without woolies 4c discount)

I've never been to a coles servo for the past year or so because of this

  • Yep in eastern suburbs melbourne they were 69.9 a few weeks ago while everywhere else was still around ~53c. Was like that for a few weeks until everywhere else jumped to 65c.

  • Down down prices are down

LPG is tending to go away.

Many Taxis no long use it, they have Hybrids

The govt isnt subsidising the installs.

A simple Google and you get the explanation why in more detail

    • You are right. Taxis going hybrid and no more government subsidy are killing lpg.
It is a pity because it is the cleanest fuel (apart electric).
If you look in Europe car manufacturers are now offering a wide range of small and middle size cars with factory fitted dual fuel.
      Australia normally follows years later.

  • Note also the price for LPG is set monthly by Saudi Arabia. The last few years they have driven it higher in the Northern Hemisphere winter months, as a lot of propane is used for heating there.
You can see the prices here:
    http://gasenergyaustralia.asn.au/reports-and-submissions/sau…

And it looks to be on the rise again.

    • I know the price is set by Saudi Arabia, but that does not explain the big difference between one servo and another.
I think Coles Express is abandoning LPG. Many of their stations have removed the LPG price from the big sign outside. And some have already removed the LPG bowser.
The coles 4c discount for LPG was great.
I need to find a way to get the 4c discount from woolworths caltex without shopping at woolworths.

Regarding the Saudis, I was suggesting that Coles might just be reflecting the price rise before the others.
Do you have a friend/family that shops at Woolies? They can give you one of their cards. I seem to get more petrol vouchers than I claim as we tend to visit the supermarket a few times a week for smaller shops. Our Woolies petrol also gives an additional 4c if you spend $5 in store, and they sell milk and bread at the same price as the supermarket.
My kids are sick of me saying "free milk!" when I fill up and return with 5L of milk.

  • I've bought regular unleaded at Coles Express two times in the last week (approx) because it was convenient and regretted it both times when I saw the price at the next places.

  • The same is happening in Perth Western Australia. Most places are up to 79.9cpl now.
A few weeks ago prices were from 63cpl to 69.9cpl
    From 63cpl to 80cpl is a 26% increase.

  • I think Coles Express is getting out of LPG.
First raise the price to eliminate demand. Then no customers complaints when they remove LPG bowser…
A pity because the 4c/l for LPG was good.
Well Woolworths still has LPG and has a very good price here in Brisbane.
May have to shop at Woolworths for groceries too…

  • Surfers Paradise & Bundall Shell garages has removed the prices on the signs, now 79.9 up from 64c.

  • It seems to be the same in every Coles Express in Brisbane too. Some have actually removed the LPG bowser completely.
