I Am Clueless about Skateboards

So a friend of mine has two skate boards, A standard one you would normally see people use at a skate park, and a smaller 'penny' style board. (Its a Globe brand and about 23" or so and plain lightly colored).

I have been using the smaller board and learning to ride it and was hoping to get a board myself so I would not need to use his constantly.

I'm not planning on doing any tricks or going to the skate park ramps. I was wanting to know if there are any recommendations for which board I should get and how much the boards should roughly cost (as I see them from $50-$200)

So far I have been told to get a longboard although I feel like I would not be able to turn as sharp if I was to be on a path. (Have not tried one)

I was looking at original penny boards and they seem either too small. (The 27" penny seems it would be okay but I'm undecided on it still)

I don't think I would really want/need one of the boards my mate has and it does not feel as smooth to ride.

Cheers, Any suggestions would be great.

What are you going to use it for? Transport? Just occasionally rolling around? How tall ate you and approx how much do you weigh?

    • Just occasionally rolling around, probably 5-6foot and 70kg-80kg (unless I somehow over/underestimated)

Get the right longboard and it will turn sharply, have large wheels for any bumps and will also have good flexibility for a smoother ride. I'd recommend looking for a 2nd hand loaded dervish for sub $200, it's easy to ride as the trucks are drop through which lowers your centre of gravity and also makes it easier to touch the ground.

  • You could get a cruiser? It's like a penny board but the size of a standard skateboard (or even bigger)and smaller than a longboard.
If it's just for cruising around, you'll want big soft wheels to go with them. Go have a look in the skate shops and try out some boards.

    • Would you say its around 27" and looks like a penny board? If so that is what i'm leaning towards but I am unsure on how much I should be spending without being ripped off. D:

      • They're usually around 32" but there are 27" ones around. Pricing depends on the brand but generally around $150-$200 for a decent one.
