Is It Worth Buying a TV from Costco?

Hi

My dick Smith tv has stopped working after only two years. It switches on but no picture. I'm therefore in the market for a new tv. Normally I'll do a lot of research and then look out for the best deal. However I'm thinking of just picking up something suitable from Costco even though it won't be the best tv or best price. Reason being if it breaks in say 5 years provided I have maintained my membership I can get a refund.

Does anyone see holes in my approach or can offer a better approach?

Cheers

  • Costco provide unlimited warranty?

    • Yeah from what I've heard you get a refund or replacement if it breaks down in the future.

Just called them and they clarified that they have 30 days return policy and no lifetime warranty. You have to send the tv to manufacturer for repair and therefore all you get is manufacturer warranty. That's worse than most retailers.

      • how is that worse than most retailers??? Each item is covered by Australian consumer law. This goes above the manufacturer warranty. And most other retailers will direct you to the company for repair anyway

They have a 30 day return policy if you change your mind and even used the item, i believe this to be better than most other retailers

      • According to the ACL you do NOT have to send to the Manufacturer.
You can make the retailer responsible for honouring consumer warranty claims.

  • Buy one from Aldi or Kogan, people will tell you how good there expensive TV is, but today if your tech savvy they are really just monitors. The technology moves so fast they are really just disposable items. I never thought Costco TV deals were that great. In five years buy a new one.

    • I guess if I could get five years then this works. Unfortunately there's no way of knowing if the tv will last 13 months or 5 years plus.

Definitely agree with you. Pissed with our TV because the remote broke, but if we had bought from Costco would've got a new TV rather than a replacement remote.

  • Not sure why you think that you would be able to get a new TV replacement in 5 years? Sure they guarantee every product but come on seriously, theres got to be some limit. I thought it was up to a year

    • Costco refunds your product if it breaks down under Australian consumer guarantee. So the duration would reasonable and depends on the TV's cost.
But they also state that they will refund if you are not satisfied with your purchase. I am not sure if there is a time limit on this.

Also, FWIW we also bought our TV (samsung) from costco about a year and a half ago as it was about $150 cheaper than anywhere else.. Also our fridge too

  • The internet is full of stories about people taking things back to Costco for a refund long after you'd expect. I know a old friend of mine took a phone back after 12 months so he could get a refund and buy a new one - I don't think they sell phones now (there's a Vodafone stand in the Costco near me)

I returned a TCL TV to Costco after about 3-4 months due to a few niggly faults (took too long to start, 4K@60fps wasn't supported even though it said HDMI 2.0 was supported.)

They just checked the box and gave me a full refund. So unless they've changed their satisfaction guarantee I'd happily buy from them again. I couldn't see any other retailer taking back a tv after 4 months due to similar issues without a huge fight.

"On Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell, and will refund your purchase price. This is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law."

So you could probably argue if it broke after 5 years you 'are not satisfied' and get a refund.
