Travelling Overseas, Need Travel Insurance

Hi guys! I normally see all those cheap travel insurance here on OzBargain, some provided by Credit card providers. I will be travelling for 10 days got the insurance that covers the cancellation cost of the ticket, however willing to get a comprehensive one as well.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Get yourself a Bankwest Zero Platinum card for the next time you purchase a ticket. Costs nothing to have, and no currency conversion fees on overseas purchases. I haven't bought travel insurance in many many years. The 28 degrees one offers the same I believe.
But prior to my Platinum card, I used to buy from Travel Insurance Direct, who usually have a 10% off special or coupon

TID have a 10% off at the moment. never claimed through them but OzB member feedback is quite positive

  • Thanks Guys!

I rang CBA got my current card to upgrade to a Gold one to get covered for the insurance. Now have to cancle the basic insurance that I had for the cancellation.

    • Uhm, you do realise that a creditcard insurance only covers you if you used it to buy the tickets, right? Simply owning the card does not cover you.
Some cards will cover you by simply spending a minimum amount towards your pre-paid expenses (which could be tickets or hotel; I believe Bankwest used to do that, but they change it recently). Your post implies you already booked tickets. So check the conditions of your gold card.

      • I think CBA is an exception to this, you get automatic coverage without needing to spend anything, but have to activate it for it to be in place.

        • Correct! As long as gold, platinum or diamond card.

SCTI were great for me travelling in South America with multiple claims.

    Highly recommended.

I have travel cover with my Westpac credit card but on my global trip last opted to buy a policy with 1Cover. I just didn't get the 100% comfort feeling that I was really covered with the credit card insurance with too many T&C's for the insurance to be activated and excesses on any claims. I've always use 1cover in the past, had claims and been happy with their cover. Plus you can normally reduce the excess to zero by paying an extra $10-20.

  • has anyone used the Virgin MOney Travel insurance before???

  • I guess that everyone needs to assess their own risk aversion. I have been travelling o/s 8 trips per year over 10 years and never had to claim. For nearly all of those trips my cover was from Free CC Insurance. I am willing to cover myself for any exclusions, and feel that I am covered for any major dramas.
