Upgraded Modem/Router and Suffered Heavy Speed Loss

Upgraded my old Billion N7800 to a brand new Asus dsl ac56u and lost a fair amount of download speed.

Should this have been the case? I had my line reset by my isp and it still stinks. Surely I should have seen an improvement or at least an equal service with the upgrade??

Any other modem/router recommendations that I wont be screwed over by?

Running poe to main desktop and everything else on wifi (small 2 bedroom apartment, concrete walls) but im not really concerned about the wifi speeds mainly the poe drop off.

  • post your modem stats please.

You can get it off your modem setup page (usually 192.168.1.1) and its normally on the status page.

the stats that will be of use are

    Line Mode
Line sync speeds (upstream / downstream)
    Noise Margin
    Line Attenuation

  • All I could find that looks vaguely like what you asked for haha

Stability Adjustment (ADSL) -5 dB Current SNR Margin: 13.0 dB
    DLA enabled
    Annex a/i/j/m - Annex mode A
    DSL modulation - G.DMT
    928kbps up and 5920kbps down

Status page doesnt show much apart from wireless info and cpu/ram usage

    Edit found it:

    TCM(Trellis Coded Modulation) On(upstream) On(downstream)
SNR Margin 13.0 dB 10.0 dB
Line Attenuation 39.0 dB 19.5 dB
    Path Mode Interleaved Interleaved
    Interleave Depth 32 8
Data Rate 5920 kbps 928 kbps
MAX Rate 6496 kbps 1120 kbps
    POWER 19.5 dbm 11.5 dbm
    INP 2.3 symbols 1.9 symbols
    CRC 32 0

  • A few things you can try:

a true, hard reset. The one I get the best result from is the, "30-30-30". With the modem on, hold the physical reset button for 30 secs, still holding->pull the power out, hold 30 secs more, still holding—>plug power back in, holding 30 secs more. Let off the reset now & allow the modem fully power back up.

Now, once more pull the power out & wait about 10 secs & then plug back in. When it powers back completely, input your adsl settings once more & see how she flies.

Changing channels can solve odd issues. 1, 6, 11 are the three which don't overlap, so are a good place to start.

Don't have the same SSID as on your old router.

You'll get more replies— try them all & good luck!

    :)

    • Many thanks, im too tired to even begin with that haha, Ill give it a whirl tomorrow arvo.

      Cheers again

a true, hard reset. The one I get the best result from

That isn't a thing and you're wasting 85 seconds of your life doing it.

      • This is true, but if you ever work in support you will know people claim to have power cycled all day long because they can't be bothered crawling under the desk or whatever.
Making is a big palaver makes people think it should actually be tried.

      • Excuse me— I have done this many times & it does absolutely work— especially when people have said they've "reset it" according to the ISP & package info. This includes following up after other techs have been called out, gave up, & told the owner to get another modem/router.

        FYI

Also, never meant it was a "cure-all", only something to try.

  • For the DSL Modulation G.DMT is for ADSL1??? Is your service ADSL1? Max speeds is 8mbps and you've got 6. That's not too bad.

    • Adsl2

      Should I change the modulation?

        Hi Gabos
From the settings you posted above, your ADSL modulation is currently on g.dmt

You need to change it. Go apply a ADSL2+ modulation and your issue should be fixed.

If you experience drop outs due to bad weather etc while on adsl2+, change modulation back to g.dmt for stability.

You should get speeds around 15mbps after u change it

  • Network engineer here. Let me guess, wifi in the billion stopped working reliably?

    • Whole unit carked it unfortunately :(

      • Worse off than me. I have moreless same equipment.
As a modem, the Asus is pretty pathetic, but as a router, its unbeatable in features, and the wifi beamforming is amazing.

If you want to take the easy way, I suggest return the asus to replace for another modem.

Or you can buy a cheap ~$50 Billion or Netcomm which will sync at great speeds and then pass the connection (bridge mode) to the Asus for routing, this way you will get great wifi and sync. If you go this way you will need to patch the ethernet cable from the bridged modem to the WAN ethernet port on the AC56U. Then configure PPPoE via WAN Eth / DHCP / Wifi/ etc on it as well. Im currently running with this setup too.
Netcomms and Billions are easy to tinker with - you can squeeze more sync out of it via SNR tweaking.

My Billion BiPAC 7404VGP-M wifi just stopped working reliably too. What modem router and model that can do long wifi range do you suggested?

      • +1

Anything with AC1900 or more, and with beamforming.
If youre looking for just a router with wifi, and no need for the dsl modem to be built in, RT AC68U is my recommendation. You can do the setup described above.
