Seek Help for Returning a Jacket to Leather Jacket Shop (Returning)

Hi,

I ordered a jacket on Leather Jacket Shop. I doubted that the jacket is made of faux leather rather than real leather as the description of the website. I already contact the seller via email. The seller insisted the leather is real and asked me to verify the jacket with some local stores. But I am not sure this is a correct way to solve the problem. The Department of Commerce says they can help me if I lodge a complaint. But this may take a long time, so I ask you guys for your opinions before I try that.

According to the seller's website, the seller requires me to pay 50AUD for handle fee on top of the return postage in the normal return process. I also found that the jacket is smelly and has no brand tag. It is sent to me by DHL from Pakistan. I guess the seller have an office but don't have a warehouse in Australia. That 50 bucks are used to send the jacket back to Pakistan.

I want a full refund. The sad thing is that I paid the order by bank transfer rather than PayPal. So my questions:
Is that legal to charge that 50 bucks?
What would you guys do for this kind of problems?

Thank you.

Update1:
Thank Ryanek and hell0 for pointing out that the jacket may be low-grade real leather. I edited the title of my post. I am still negotiating with the seller. I will keep you guys updated on this issue. Thank you for all the comments.

Update2:
I am going through the return process with the help of the seller. I will update if anything goes wrong in the future.
Thank godofpizza for the info. I found that I made a mistake on the handling fee as well. Sorry for all stupid things I have done. Thank you all for helping me through. I learnt a lot from you guys.

It will be leather but definitely low grade. Unless they have a return policy I don't see what recourse you have.

  • I agree with Ryanek in that the quality of the leather may be your issue rather than its authenticity. Would it be worthwhile to take the jacket to a saddlemaker/leathersmith & ask their opinion so at least you will have some certainty.

If the jacket is real leather then returning it is a change-of-mind return and the store doesn't have to return/exchange it for you at all.

    • Thank you and Ryanek. I think you are right. I don't know much about buying leather stuffs before.

I am not sure that the leathersmith's opinion can be used as a prove.

I may return as change-of-mind and take my lesson.

So you just expect them to take your word and give you a full refund plus cover return shipping? Considering that you have no proof and this is all speculation. Even eBay requires proof of counterfeit from manufacturer for fake stuff.

I believed that the jacket is made of faux leather rather than real leather as the description of the website

have you verified with someone who would know whether it is actually leather?

The Pakistan shipping actually makes it very likely it is real leather, as there and India are where the majority of cheap leather work is carried out. PU leather seems to come from east Asia.
Assuming it is real leather, you are asking for a 'change of mind' refund, for which a handling fee is not unreasonable.

  • maybe go to few local store and see the difference between cheap and pricey jackets are like. they have a 30 day return policy, was you jacket a special order?
