OzBargainers, What's Your Favourite Free PC Game?

I'm blatantly stealing this from reddit but I'd love to know what free PC games OzBargainers are playing/have played.

A few of the suggestions given on reddit were multiplayer/MMORPGs, so if any free game already has an OzBargain community that'd be awesome.

EDIT Thought I'd put together a list of recommendations, excluding the emulators and low cost content.
EDIT2 Added a few more games to the list - I don't think there's any need for me to buy games for at least a decade based on these suggestions!

This is OzBargain, any PC game can be free

    • +4

I didn't realise you were allowed to post links to The Pirate Bay on the site ;)

      • +3

Doesn't have to be pirating. For example lots of free games on Steam have been posted here before.

        • +4

          Was only joking scotty :)

        • +3

          Doesn't have to be pirating

          I didn't hear no there :p

      • I wish you set these up as a poll. That would make it a lot easier and useful as a reference page for future.

    • +3

When you have no friends to play online, don't chose a game with denovo protection or a game that doesn't require an always on online connection for singleplayer - if you want to steal it, sure.

  • +5

    Runescape gg

  • +1

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, probably the game I've played the longest. I've seen some of my friends playing Dwarf Fortress, though I've never got into them.
Super Crate Box is also very fun to play.

Spelunky started as a free game and the original is still fun to play with (though I think the paid version is better). Similiarly, Cave Story (the original game, not Cave Story+ which updated graphics + more) was a very good game.

Also, I am not sure whether this technically counts as a game, but Powder Toy is also fairly fun to play with.

    • Nice, I'll have a play of DCSS and Cave Story - I've got Spelunky on my PC but haven't put much time in it. A few of my friends are obsesses with Dwarf Fortress but concede that it's pretty complicated, so I'll try to get through the difficult early stages and see how I fare.

I've also heard Path of Exile is a good game for people who liked the Diablo series - any opinions?

      • I am not exactly a multiplayer person, online games have never been my thing.
Though that sounds interesting… might give it a try later.

      • Path of Exile has a lot of content, and I'm sure it's great, but I got to the end of the game and still felt like I wasn't having a whole lot of fun.

You'd probably be better off playing Diablo 3 or Torchlight 2 again, but if not, PoE is free so what's the harm in trying.

      • Path of exile is great

Play the first time through and expect to get stuck due to not choosing the right upgrades

Then check the PoE forums and play one of the theory crafted builds.

But I agree that the endgame gets boring. It's the journey not the destination.

  • +2

Paladins. 2GB Overwatch ripoff with similar characters, graphics, etc.

  • +2

    Tibia

    • +1

Tibia was THE game back in the day.

      • REALLY?

        • Not sure if sarcasm, but yes, 7 years before world of warcraft was even released, tibia hit the scenes in all its laggy, 2D, 8 bit styled, soundless, dial-up glory.

        • @Riczter:

          Runescape classic was better imo

  • +10

    solitaire and minesweeper

  • +7

Dota or League. However, the shrink after playing can be expensive.

    • +1 for league of legends, i have to keep myself away, bad things happen. There is no casually playing league :/

    • No love for heroes of the storm?

      • nope. too casual for me

      • well… based on the skill level and inflexible thinking of the players that are not there for the oni genji skin… no. no love. imo to think that the camps and flags make a difference to your game is laughable when you jump in straight from a dota game. the skill level of the average dota player can crush a hots player with a pinky.

        • Inflexible thinking?

I feel like you're stating a point about the general player base for any MOBA haha

        • @Online Bathroomware: haha, more so hots than even LoL.

        • @shuckeru: Personally since playing WC3/TFT DotA and moving on to League, I've found the experience more enjoyable with the lack of gold and items. I like being able to stomp a game in 10 minutes and move on instead of having a drawn out game where your can team throw because you can't just push to base and win.

        • @Online Bathroomware: i guess it sounds like you're more into casual games. personally, it feels like using a cheat code. fun for a little while, and then when the fun wears off, you're never able to have fun with the game again. on the other hand… look how DotA is still marching strong.

        • @shuckeru: It's not a casual game if you're actually competitive :)

The intricacies of objectives, pushing lanes, and rotating between lanes to engage in team fights is far more satisfying for me than having to worry about carrying another lane that keeps losing their gold and can't buy items.

In DotA and LoL, if your team mates fail in their lanes, they jeopardise the entire game, whereas in HotS you can be on the defensive all game and have a ripper team fight and wipe the enemy team 20 minutes in and then push to win.

        • @Online Bathroomware: i feel that that only encourages selfish behaviour in the game because no matter what your teammates do you can win. not really the point of a team MOBA imo. but then again its existence does mean the selfish (and consequently shitty teammates) in dota and lol go to hots which is a good thing all around.

  • +6

    Portal…
Just flat out best game paid or not!
The concept, the way the level of difficulty increases as your your skills/knowledge increase, the comedy, plus it has Cake!

  • +1

    Planetside 2
    Guild Wars 2

    • how is guild wars 2 free?

    • +3

Planetside 2 gets my vote as pretty good f2p game

Also well soldat/openlierox/abunchofothers and RotMG was pretty fun while it lasted.

  • +11

Dota 2 all day … and night

    • salty 1hr long losses, salt lake city!

      • I got a 57% win rate with pub games, but yeah the salt is real

        • I've lost 500 mmr points in the past month. I literally cannot win.

    • easily my most played game
we should really have an ozbargain group

    • Find game while you surf Oz bargain on steam web browser (takes around 5 mins to find a match).

  • Team Fortress 2 is always fun.

    • TF2 is my favourite game at the moment. Great graphics, seems to always have servers with other people on it for multiplayer play, plus it's a game my son and I can play together.

I saw that Overwatch is free to play this weekend, and I downloaded it, but it says the gfx card I have is too slow (GeForce 9600GT). Probably need some nuclear power gfx card or something.

  • Dwarf Fortress

    • But DCSS is so much simpler. Choose Gargoyle Fighter and spam Tab, repeat until you win.

      • But you can't build a gigantic Dwarf statue with a goblin-manpower operated chest-mounted lava rocket launcher in Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup!

Also, I prefer the DF wound system. Usin' a sharp weapon? Cut some nerves! Using a blunt weapon? Gore some noggins! Usin' a crossbow? Somehow penetrate the hand, neck, upper thigh, and spine in one bolt!

        • Eh, DCSS I think was aiming to be a simpler game, which in my opinions, shows with how they've changed the systems around over the years. I still remember how you couldn't cut meat up if you had a cursed blunt weapon in your hand.

Though technically, I think DCSS do have something similiar to that (i.e. Hydras grow more heads when you attack them with sharp weapons, auxilary attacks from your horns or other mutations, sharp weapons and claws spraying blood which can turn into fire cloud if you are a demonspawn with that mutation etc).

That said… that does sound awesome enough for me to give it another go.

        • +1

@Oversimplified: Well, I consider them entirely different games, and love both. DCSS is the best roguelike out there; but DF is not a roguelike. It's… Well, it's a Dwarf Fortress game, it started a genre now populated with many games, the best of which so far is RimWorld.

Dwarf Fortres is pretty easy to exploit, too. The real difficulty is not in playing, but learning how to play. It's not a videogame, but a story simulator. It's not designed to be fun, it's designed to intrigue you, and see what your dwarves get up to.

Will your fortress be attacked by the undead from within? Will your master craftsdwarf go insane and murder his children, just because you didn't get him the right gems? Will the elves bring you that amazing pet giant eagle you've always wanted? Will the dragon successfully be tamed or will he burn another tamer? Will the vampire be elected mayor again?

Yes, by the way. The always elect the f***ing vampire.

        • It's not a videogame, but a story simulator.

          Tell me more

        • @USB-V: I would've gone with Trenchant Insight :o Even though I have no idea what that means

…That game on the Simpsons plays a lot like the average Telltale game. How do you even make a parody of something 10 years before it's made?

        • +1

          @FrankMcFuzz:

They went for the most effete of premises for a video game, based as it was on a film containing zero action. The writer was acutely aware of film/game tie-ins, and they took it to a comical extreme.

Action arcade games of that era most popular among boys involved fighting (SF, MK, KI) or unsafe driving (take your pick).

My interpretation at the time was sarcastic vision of sanitised gaming as mandated by Concerned Mothers of America.

As for Telltale and others emphasising story, it's just taking those Choose Your Own Adventure books to the virtual space. That, and these companies chasing the USP of "filmic, narrative-driven gameplay".

  • +1

Warframe is quite addictive and I like how you can progress quite steadily without paying a cent and especially more so if you trade here and there.

  • Haven and Hearth, if you like MMO games and the new survival trend.

  • Blade and Soul (which is an MMO, though you can p2w).

  • Pokemon Trading Card Game Online (PTCGO) usually I'm not a fan of them but damnn do I love playing this game. Been a bit off lately with playing my PS4 but yeah http://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/play-online/

  • I just started playing diablo 3 again " now its all fixed and fun to play " and im enjoying it .

    • +1

It's not free. Go with Path of Exile (http://www.pathofexile.com/). Not only free, but way better than D3 could ever aspire to be.

      • Yeah read though that point my bad , i played path of exile in the early beta's it didnt grab me " but it was an early beta " ……

  • +1

    ADOM!

    • +1

      YES!

  • +1

I'm not into MMOs so here is my list of free pc favourites:

    Tower Of Heaven (amazing music)
Ben There Dan That (funniest dialogue) Achievement Unlocked series, Out of Order, Seiklus, An Untitled Story, N, Ikachan (same guy that did Cave Story), La-Mulana (the classic version is free), Escape From The Underworld (oh the music), Cry Of Fear (one of scariest games I have played), many escape the room games, and a s***load of text adventures (my favourite being Vespers, Shrapnel and Anchorhead).

  • league of legends

  • C&C Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge.

This game never gets old for me :)

    • I guess you could say its a, 'one way trip'?

      \i'll see myself out

  • Over 300 games on steam… Only finished like 30 of them (completionist, have had to lower my standards to only finishing 75% of achievements)….. Can't remember which ones were free but one of my favourites was a simplified flash version of portal on new grounds… Otherwise paid version (on sale of course)… Rogue legacy is addictive and short

  • +1

    0ad https://play0ad.com
It's an opensource, cross-platform Age of Mythology / Age of Empires style game.
A new version came out last week, which is a lot more fun (can't just spam Spartans at the enemy AI anymore)

  • Would have to be Legend of Princess, the Zelda 2d platformer fan game that never was. It's a demo (only a couple of levels) but one of the most creative games I've played in the genre.

    https://indiegamestand.com/free-games/659/legend-of-princess…

  • Indie game stand
Has $15 Power Ranger simulator Chroma Squad going for Pay What You Want. The minimum pay is actually 25 US cents so not free but practically free

    • *Note that it's a minimum of $2.50 for a Steam key

  • +1

Heroes and Generals is great once you get your head around how to use the ui etc.

In terms of value for money, however, 3,000 hours tells me Arma 3 is the best value game I've bought (+all DLC).

    • +1

Agree with Arma 3. I'm not a gamer by any means but Arma 3 is great value/great to play .. and there are so many variations to try; Campaigns, King of the Hill, Invade, Altis Life, etc. something for everyone.

      • Gamemakers who not only allow, but encourage mods are just the most amazing people on the planet haha

  • Any World of Tanks players? Although available on PC, I play on PS4.

    • Yep, played them both. Very addictive title. Managed to stop playing so that I could play some of my other backlogs.

      • +1

        I may have a premium account……………….

    • I had a crack at it on my old Xbox 360 but didn't play more than a few games. One of my buddies loves World of Warships so have got that on the PC for the occasional mid-week battle

    • Put in thousands of hours on that game over 5 years but haven't played it much this year.

      • The grind through the tanks is pretty full on.

  • +3

    BF2 - Pizza Hut deal!

  • +3

Hearthstone - though this has personally not been even close to F2P for me…

    • For a long time player, its easy to be a f2p.

For a new player, its a real slog

  • +1

I have THOUSANDS of Hours on Dota2.

Seriously I have like 2000 Wins and I have about a 50% win rate sooo, average game is about 40 mins x 4000 games…. thats a lot of time.

Pretty good for a free game, saying that I have spent a few Hundy on random stuff but I dont mind as I play so much

    • This ^
I dont have nearly as many hours - nearly 2500.
I am also happy to put some money into it - and i have gained a little back as well (got a courier from a chest about 3 years ago worth over $150, a couple pretty rare weapons from chests that were worth upward of $30 and i rolled an LC arcana from i think one of the free events which was $20)

      • I bought a void "time breaker" item hoping to sell it for a profit or swap for a pudge whale hook (I don't know why I didn't just buy the pudge hook for like am extra $30 USD) but yeh anyway I still have that item and it's probably worth half what I payed for it…

Oh and it's ugly as shit to

        • haha yea so hit and miss as to what keeps value

    • To be honest I like the original Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne Dota map. Not the spin off Dota 2 itself

  • Hearthstone should be mentioned

(My others favourites are path of exile and heroes of the storm)
