Where to Go? How Much? Fixed Dates

Hi family,

I have Annual Leave booked for Fri 27th Jan – Sun 12th Feb = 17 days.

I've never travelled overseas. I don't want to travel alone. I most likely will take 1-3 mates with me - Boys Trip. I like experiences. We're all Uni Students and so don't have a lot of money.

Budget $3-$4k approx. Maybe even $5k.

Where should I go? What places are good at that time of year? How much can I expect to pay? When should I book? Have I left it too late?

Thanks All. Any input is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Im 21 years old, and so are the boys. We want to sight see and do adrenaline-pumping activities. Not overly HUGE on parties and night life, but would like to have at least 1 wild night.

More specific question: How much shouild return tickets be to SE Asia (per person) from Syd Airport, to be considered a bargain?

Thanks

  • Vietnam / Thailand according to friends of mine. Do your research, but Vietnam sounds great by all accounts…

  • Thailand is good for first time travellers.

  • 4k in for 17 days is more then plenty, what age range are you in and what kind of experiences do you want?

Are you keen to do hostels? Party a lot? Sightseeing?

I would not do Europe in January if you haven't been in summer. I wouldn't do Canada or Japan in January unless you ski/snowboard.
SE Asia is your best bet. Your recommendations would be based on what you value most: some places are stunning but not fun to party in.

Budgetwise: 3 grand for an entire month in Thailand (Northern or Southern Island Hopping) is extravagant IMO. You can have crazy fun. Get your open water cert in koh tao. Lots of European travellers. Great fun.

SE Asia is quick and easy to book, I've booked flights the day before and would organise hostel once I get there, but you can be more organised if that suits you.

  • go to USA & go skiing. It's now incredibly cheap in Colorado. Cheaper than anywhere despite the exchange rate.

You will probably have a choice of airfares to west coast under $1000
