Let's talk about Men Suits

Hi Ozbargainers,

I was wondering what's everyone opinion on OTS suits from the following brands. I'm thinking of getting one as a recently made custom suit hasn't gone according to the plan and they definitely stuffed up the measurements.

  • T. M. Lewin
  • CT
  • Hawes & Curtis
  • MJ Bale

I'm leaning towards TM as their shirts are of a decent quality and good value for money. I've tried 40 short jacket and fitted me very nicely, even nicer than the custom made suit. MJ Bale jackets and attention to detail was a nice touch however they seem to run way slimmer than TM slim suits.

I'm of a stocky build with a 33' inch and 24.5 inch thighs so it's really hard to find pants. Form recent searches, apparently H&C do really nice suits and their quality is better than TM lewin.

Hope to hear some opinions.

Cheers

  • a recently made custom suit hasn't gone according to the plan and they definitely stuffed up the measurements.

More important question is… Did you still have to pay for it?

    • Yes, I don't see how they stuffed up a custom-made suit?? I had couple from India that were complete rubbish but I think this was probably more due to what I was wearing on teh day I was fitted - loose clothes, slouchy pants, etc and I think they just measured to the wrong points based on my outfit at the time

      • Well if they are tailor making your suit, if it doesn't fit, you should let them know and have they fix it until it fits right IMO. I mean you did pay for their service and if it doesn't fit you, they didn't do their job properly.

        • Honestly, as much as I would like to get them to fix the suit, I not a fan of their quality and gave me a run around on couple of occassions. When I tried it on, it felt so filmsy.

I thought it may be cause of s130 wool but when i tried a s130 from MJ Bale and despite being a OTS suit, it fitted and was built nicely.

      • I was thinking the same TBH. When I tried the suit first time around it was way too tight around my upper legs that I cant even bend down to pick anything up. The guy who took the measurements asked me whether I put on weight and told him that I actually lost couple of pounds. Secondly, the jacket arms were too tight and he gave an excuse "ah we didn't took the shirt into an account" as I wearing a tshirt when he took the measurement and whilst trying the suit, I was wearing a TM lewin twill shirt. Total BS!

    • Well, I'm going to find out sooner or later. Hahaha. I dont want to name the place yet but they advertise fit guarantee and we'll refund if not happy with the product apparently. Just going to give it a try and find out.

  • Where are you located? I'm in Melb and stumbled across Andre Suits in Mulgrave, right near IKEA Springvale, I've got 2 suits there are both fit well. Wished I knew of him before my wedding a few years go but oh well. Average cost $300-400 for pants, shirt and top

    • Haha i thought for a second you bought your suits from IKEA…

      • LOL. I was thinking the same. I'm located in Sydney.

  • +1

Wolf Kanat for me all day long. I own 4. Am also a stocky build, 34" waste 23.5 inch thighs. The calves are a little tight on them but if you like a perfectly cut, slim fitting suit check them out, most suit shops will have them, or there is always DJ's/Myer

  • " I've tried 40 short jacket and fitted me very nicely"

You need to try more short jacket i think. :P

  • You need to go to a reputable place if you go down the custom route. Try Montagio / Patrick Johnson / Suit Shop. They're the best 3 places in Sydney without costing an arm and a leg. May be a little more expensive than the brands you mentioned, but you'll be very pleased with the results. Can guarantee nothing will get stuffed up, there are multiple fittings and they know their stuff.
