Thanksgiving Party Game - Rules Needed

Hi,
I'm needing suggestions from any wise tactical game players/ozbargainers on the best way to run this game.
It's meant to be a fun game for adults at a Thanksgiving gathering with a small token prize for the correct answer.

Imagine a 2 metre square piece of material with lots of pumpkin images. That's the only image and they are in a random pattern.
The game is Guess the number of pumpkins.
But the problems I'm trying to avoid are:

Having to be there and enforce a time limit for guessing the number.
A poster that can encourage people to be honest and have a fair guess and not stand there for 30 minutes and strategically guess the number of pumpkins.

So over to you, how would you word the poster that tells people how to play my count the pumpkin game?

Everyone throws their car keys into a bowl and…

    Oh wait, different thing

    • Ha ha , yes that's definitely another game for another gathering!

  • Just a random one but maybe fold the material in half (or quarters) and make them guess the total amount, that way theres a bit of luck involved as you kind of have to figure out whats not there as well. That way no matter how much they count they can never get the right amount?

Only other thing I can think of is using sooo many pumpkin pictures that its not worth counting. I'm assuming anything that takes longer then 10 minutes to count people probably wont (if you say don't count in the rules, they arn't likely to stand there for 30 minutes to be caught out cheating) or will get lost in counting if the pictures are randomly placed so they will likely say "way to many to count" and guess instead.

Other then that, I don't know much else you can do without enforcing the time limit yourself. Maybe even saying something along the lines of it being a guessing game, so no counting allowed! Is hopefully enough for people to use the honour system.

All good suggestions, thank you for your advice. BTW the correct number is between 400 & 700 so I believe you're right that people will just "guess"

  • How about…don't stress over it?

Unless the prize is a car, or you're entire friend group consists of autistic savants, nobody is going to stand around for 30min counting pumkins.

    • OK

    • depends how boring the party is :p

If counting pumpkins is a highlight then I guess it will be pretty boring.

Also who has Thanksgiving parties in Australia?

        • Who has trick or treat in Australia.
The game will be one of many for the afternoon

  • So whats the go Joe? What sort of 'prize' are we talking about here?

    • An all expenses paid trip to Haiwai for 2 people

  • OzBargain, not MuricaBargain ;)
