Cosmetic Damage on New Fridge. Offered $300 or a Replacement Door. What Should I Do?

I recently bought an Electrolux french door fridge, and noticed there was a mark on one of the doors. I'm not sure if it's a scratch on the surface, or a blemish in the steel under the clear coat. It runs most of the way across the door, right at eye height, but isn't visible from afar. There's also small marks on the handle of the freezer door. Electrolux has offered to give me a $300 damage allowance, or to send a technician out to replace the door.

It's a $2180 fridge (although thanks to cashbacks I paid $1280), so I'd like it to look as it should. But then again, if I had damaged it myself and the repair cost was $300, I wouldn't get it repaired. Either way, I have a choice between $300 or having a fridge with a blemish on it.

I know a factory second fridge would have more than a $300 discount applied, and I assume the technician and parts will cost them more than $300, but I don't think I can ask for anymore. It sounds like it's a set rate.

I'm interested in other peoples opinions…

  • Of course you should take the $300! What are you, crazy??

Now I know what rich people do all day…

  • i would take the money. Put a magnet or a shopping list or something over the mark and spend the $300 filling up your fridge :)

If it were me? Take the $300. Buy beer, put beer in fridge, wait for beer to be cold, remove beer from fridge and drink. Look at fridge and notice that one of kids has already drawn on it in permanent marker. Shrug and enjoy beer.

  • Does it affect the functionality of the fridge? If not, take the money.

  • you are crazy for not taking the $300. cover the scratch with something if it really bothers you

  • I wanted to keep it magnet free, but you guys are right. I needed some logical input rather than my irrational 'fancy new fridge must be perfect' thoughts.

I might try pushing the 'factory seconds would be cheaper' angle to see if they offer more. The worst they can say is no.

Not sure why someone would down vote you for this - it's exactly what I would do too :-)

  • The marks are barely cosmetic. I would take the $300 if it is non-functional damage (e.g. won't cause rust etc)

Try to ask them for $500 if not just take the $300.

Well this has become interesting. I accepted the offer, but they sent me a $300 voucher for cashback on the purchase of another Electrolux family product. That isn't what was offered. They offered a $300 prepaid visa card. Now they are claiming they never said that.

In other news, the fridge freezes everything. A service guy came out and showed me a wire that wasn't connected at the factory. He fixed it, but said there could be other things missed, so he ordered a new one for me.

    Problem solved.
