Returning Faulty Item to China (Import Tax)

Some of you may remember my dilemma a couple of weeks back regarding an expensive item with the wires cut. ( https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/274973 )

I found the cheapest way to ship the item back and included insurance for peace of mind.

The seller recently contacted me and said China Customs is expecting Taxes to be paid on it (and he says that will come out of his pay).

I didn't think it was expected the seller would have to pay taxes on a return for full refund?

I couldn't find any information online about returns to China. Anybody here have any ideas on a Chinese Sellers rights on returns such as this one?

  • Is it going via Hong Kong? There is no import tax in Hong Kong.

    • SHENZHEN, China via. TNT

  • +1

Chinese people have quota how much they can import per year. Also, if the item is valued more than certain amount ($150??) It will be stopped and tax needs to be paid.

I think companies can only go around this restriction if they have facilities at free trade zones or what they are called.

If the recipient does not pay the tax, there is a good chance the item is lost/stolen. Happened to me the only time when I sent something expensive back for repairs and was just expecting the courier to ship the item back to me here is Aus.

Recommend you get it fixed locally and try to negotiate a small discount with the seller.

  • Hi
I have experience dealing with chinese customs.
How much is the item worth?

  • I think everyone would mark items as returns if it avoided tax. I think he's telling the truth, but he should have said something prior to sending it.

If the item is not fit for use, doesnt that make it worthless ? Its a faulty item, it has no value.

  • Why are you bothering with what "he will pay" thats his problem.

You mentioned you were waiting on Aliexpress determination. What did they say?
