Easy Way to Unlocking iPhone?

hi all,
is it easy to unlock an iphone?
i don't want to jailbreak it (i think that means hacking into it so you can put any apps on there), just wwant to be able to use it with any network.
this is from the recent virgin $35 deal. Or do I need to pay them the $80.
if i did it myself, would it void warranty?

  • AFAIK
You need your carrier to do it for you, I'm not completely sure how this works (locking on an iphone whether it is software or hardware and whether a restore will stuff it up or not), but once you call them up for it to be unlocked, after you connect it to your iTunes, it will unlock it for you.
[i don’t want to jailbreak it (i think that means hacking into it so you can put any apps on there)] - Jailbreaking doesn't completely mean that, sure it is well-known after you jailbreak it you can do that, but some users choose to jailbreak purely for the extras, such as backgrounding (multi-tasking before multitask came out) putting custom themes and such.
I have both borrowed applications and bought applications, I've got an iPod Touch though.
According to some people, after 12 months you can get a free unlock, maybe ask virgin support about it.
I don't think you can do it yourself without jailbreaking it.

    Read.
It's impossible to do without jailbreaking it.
3 Hardware-embedded IDs, only 5 attempts before permanent locking, that's how brutal Apple is.
Very effective too, that's why you don't see any official unlocking tools on the net.

jailbreaking is the best way of unlocking the iphone without paying…and jailbreaking isn't only about putting apps on.
a jailbroken iphone is a 100 times better than a stock one and most people wouldn't have an iphone unless they could jailbreak it.

  • Has anyones iphone been stuck on the "connect to itunes" screen?

This happened to my jailbroken phone last night. Apparently its saying I have the most recent update 3.1.3. However I've never updated it and have always been running 3.1.2

    • Most recent is iOS 4.0

  • your a genius cwongtech.

I think I know where I went wrong. For some apparent reason i was tryin to upgrade my phone to 3.1.3 and then unlocking it.

Dont know why I didnt download 4.0

    Hope blackrain works for 4.0

    Thanks mate

  • Yeah, no good. Couldn't even restore my iphone with any of the firmwares.

It's frozen on the reboot screen, showing itunes and the usb cable.

I've heard the new jailbreak works. I think they use sn0wbreeze (or something with sn0w in it)

Just got to get my phone out of this rebooting screen then I will be able to jailbrea it… again

Let me know if you have any ideas

    • DFU Mode

      try following that
      worked for me for 4.0

    • Getting past the connect to itunes screen is fairly easy if you already have an OS installed but it is stuck in a reboot loop.. BUT you have be confortable to use the command line.. just need to follow the instructions.. What you should search for is a little program called iRecovery - it'll kick it out of the reboot loop and get it to boot normally.
