Anova Sous Vide Smells & Temp inaccurate

Hi,just trying out my Anova and results are good however from when I unpacked it there is a really strong plastic smell coming from the black parts. Strong enough to waft through the whole open plan living/dining area! Had to open windows to cope. Any one else got this? Assume it will fade in time, but unexpected from a kitchen device of this price. I have emailed them to see if this is normal.

Edit: Also, it seems the temp is way out. Measuring using the SuperFast Thermopen (http://www.thermapen.com.au/), Anova = between 76.5 to 78.5 (changing all over the place) vs. TP = a stable 92.4-92.6 Turned it off and on again. Changed to Anova = 84 and TP = 91.6. what the?

Edit: now it's showing 62-66 and the TP is still on about 92.5! Emailed them…

Edit: left it for a while longer, partially covered pan, came good. Now aligning with the thremopen! Wtf! Will try again next weekend.

  • If it doesn't smell like burning it might be OK (http://gizmodo.com/5656463/the-origins-of-that-new-gadget-sm…). Of course, until one day they discover the notorious plastic smell in new gadgets in fact causes disease :)

    • Yeah…who knows. However I've never bought something with this level of smell before!

    • Interesting I have updated the topic as it's not showing reading temp correct

    • Sounds like a warranty job to me.

  • I got mine a few days ago. I don't remember if there was any strange smell or not but even if there was, it was mild enough for me not to notice.

Temperature control on my unit seems fine. Sounds like yours is faulty.

  • +1

Could you post the smell for us?
