Dell Inspiron 15 7559 Cracked Screen

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 7000U series laptop from Dell's official eBay store in March 2016. I had a smooth run with the laptop but recently my screen got cracked.
There is a big slash on the screen going from the left corner of the screen to the top middle. I can still see probably 30%-40% of the screen. The rest of the screen all I can see is colourful lines.

I contacted Dell's customer service and I have been told that they do not cover such damage. I tried to escalate the issue to their Executive Escalations department to get it repaired with no cost but I have been informed that they cannot approve such request.

So I asked for a quote from them and they sent me the following quote;

The cost of the parts = $891.00
The cost of the repair= $165.00

which is the total amount of $1056.00.

I was shocked and really annoyed when I saw this quote coz I find it ridiculously expensive as the total cost of the laptop was $1,119.20.

I was wondering if anyone came across similar situations and how they ended up resolving. Also, if anyone can provide me a solution I would appreciate it.

The laptop's screen is 15.6" FullHD 1920 X 1080 Anti-glare matte screen.

I uploaded an image of what it looked like when it first happened. It is worse now.

  • How did the screen get cracked? From the pic, looks like either the laptop was dropped or something heavy got dropped on top of the screen

I put my study notes which weren't that thick on top of the keyboard and I closed the screen and I put it in my bag like that. When Opened my screen I was shocked.
I did not think it would do such damage though.

you're out of luck then, looks like the damage was caused by user error. Which isn't covered by Dell's warranty. I'm not really sure what you're expecting from Dell at this point, are you a) expecting them to cover the damage for free under warranty or b) expecting a lower repair quote?

Either way, I think your best option is to source the part yourself(ebay is a good place to find them) and either fix it yourself or get a computer-savvy friend of yours to do it for you. Service manuals for Dell laptops are usually easy to source and give full disassembly/assembly instructions.

        • Thanks for the reply.

Yes I tried to get them to fix it free at first but later I wanted them to lower the quote but they did not really care.i got told they cannot do anything about it and the cost is generated by the system.

Anyway, I ordered a new screen which cost me $84. I will repair it myself.

          Appreciate your time.

Instead of blaming dell for your own stupidity, maybe you should contact your insurance company and claim the accidental damage. Otherwise find the part yourself and fix it yourself.

    1 screen left, your welcome

    • I accept that it is my fault, but I would at least expect them to lower the repair cost.
Only reason I did not want to do it myself in the first place was because its warranty will be void once I open the laptop

Definitely user-damaged from your description, so not a valid warranty claim. Can't fault Dell for that.

But their repair price sounds very high - the replacement part should only cost $200 at most. Almost $900 is utterly ludicrous.
