Buy from Dell USA online with Australian debit card? Possible? How would you get around restrictions?

I am interested in a laptop being sold by Dell USA.

Its staff claim in live chat that Dell USA will not accept Australian issued debit card nor credit card.

They also claim Dell USA will not accept Paypal account funded by an Australian credit card.

How to get around this challenge?

Please advise.

Thanks a million.

  • Does Dell Australia not sell anything that is the same thing? Why are you trying to buy from Dell USA?

Are you actually saving any money by the time you add in shipping, and currency conversion?

Credit cards in the US work slightly differently in that the website "verifies" the address associated with the card. Some companies have websites that the staff can override this (you should ask for a manager or something to do this) but some don't.

Dell Australia is the poor cousin selling less powerful laptops at much more expensive prices compared to Dell USA for the same models.

I would prefer not to buy from Dell Australia.

Thanks for your insights into how US credit cards work.

Are you sure? Make sure you convert the USD to AUD. Unless you have a 28 degrees card you'll get killed with international fees as well…

There's no harm in trying to make a US paypal account. You could possibly try and buy a US prepaid credit card as well.

        • Yes, I want a laptop with 16GB RAM, Dell Australia does not have that model at the Australian price point I want.

We are getting screwed by Dell Australia in Australia.

I have a Citibank Plus Transaction Account Visa debit card. But it is issued in Australia.

I think 28 degrees card you mentioned will also be issued in Australia, which Dell USA will not accept, from what I have gleaned so far.

        • @Lurker: Try calling their sales line and you should be able to use your Australian credit card. Debit card may not work. You'll have to ship it to a forwarding service and then have them send it to you. This will be ~$50-80USD.

What model is it? You haven't said how much you are going to save ?

        • @knick007:

I will save a couple of hundred A$.

The main thing is I want a 17" screen 16GB RAM laptop at less than A$1800 and Dell Australia does not have anything at less than A$2000

    • 'Australia Tax' - Laptops love using the Australia tax prices.

  • Use a forwarding service such as PriceUSA.

    • Thanks.

Sounds like it means I will have to get them to buy on my behalf.

I am trying to cut out the middle man to do this buying task.
