Indian Currency

Hi guys,

I'm heading to India soon (28th December) and will be staying for about 1.5 weeks. There seems to be alot of issues getting hold of indian rupees while there and I was hoping to get some locally (Sydney) before heading over.
Any information on how I would get a hold of some INR in Sydney would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

  • You can't take more than Rs7500 to india. Better to take $ and do convert on the airport. You will get better price at airport rather than outside in india.

  • It would depend on what kind of trip you are taking and where, but from my experience getting hands on small currency can be very difficult, alot of small businesses ranging up to medium sized supermarkets do not carry much change. Some people will even refuse to sell you something small with large notes (makes me think getting access to small notes is an issue for them too)

On another note, a few of the major bank atms will take Commonwealth Bank cards and offered a very similar exchange rate to elsewhere, which can be a handy way to get bulk 100s, if you don't mind international transaction fees.

All this is based off of trips prior to the 500-1000 rupee note fiasco, I'm sure you're aware to avoid them.

By 28 December, it should be normal. Plus debit/credit cards work along with online PayTM app.Follow ozyboy advise and you should be ok.
