Locked Phone from Overseas Vendor

I'm very much a mobile phone newbie.
I bought one of the deals mentioned here & have had nothing but trouble.
The latest, and worse, is that it's not recognising my sim card (which has been tested on other phones).
I've taken it to three repair places (including Optus who I am with). Two didn't have a clue but the third one said it looks as though it's locked!!
What does this mean & how can I get it unlocked? It's a Nexus 5X

Thanks for any advice
Larry

  • The phone is service provider locked. Like say locked to telstra so you cant use an optus sim. Only in your case the service provider is overseas.

  • And is there anything I can do about it?

  • +1

What deal, what provider? Please give more info.
You should first see whether it was sold as unlocked.
If that is the case, ask the seller to supply an unlock code.
If that is not possible, there are sellers on Ebay that can supply codes for under $5. E.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-NEXUS-5X-H791-Unlock-Code-Vodafon…

  • Take the sim out, and put it back in. Look at the user guide and make sure you are inserting it with correct orientation.

  • What supplier did you buy it from?

  • What deal? From where?

    What did the description say?

Have you contacted the store you bought it from?

  • Shopping square deal? You paid with PayPal? Start a dispute with eBay.

  • I'm not complaining about the deal here. I didn't think it was the appropriate place. I just wanted to know if anybody knows how to fix it.
However it was a deal from back in September
BRAND NEW LG GOOGLE NEXUS 5X H791 16GB 4G LTE UNLOCKED SMARTPHONE BLACK from DWI Digital Cameras. There was a delay over stock & then size & when I finally got it the sim card tray was broken. DWI didn't want to know so for the sake of a couple of bucks I bought a new tray. This arrived last week & now all this.
    Yes I have contacted DWI.
The sim card is being inserted correctly.

I was under the impression I couldn't buy an unlock code unless I knew who it was locked to.

    • Can you elaborate? What do you mean the sim tray was broken? It was a new device so why didn't you just return it??

DWI is Australian right? In that case you'll have rights under the consumer law.

Are you sure you bought the correct sim card tray?

At this point assuming you paid with paypal, I'd be returning the device for a full refund. It'll be locked to some random carrier. Probably not Australian.

    • Maybe sim slot is damaged? Unless your phone is telling you with message that it is locked, I would assume SIM not connecting properly.

  • the sim tray consists of 2 very thin L shaped pieces of metal joined together to form a rectangle. At one end is a plastic piece , slightly bigger, which forms part of the outer case of the phone. It was the opposite end of this that was broken. DWI refused to acknowledge it was their problem & kept insisting it must have been us who broke it. I thought about starting a complaint with ebay & PayPal but the replacement tray only cost a couple of bucks so I decided against it. Unfortunately it only cost a couple of bucks because it came by camel. all the way.
After it finally arrived & we slotted the sim card in everything seemed ok except it couldn't see the sim card & no matter what we do that's all it says.
The only reason I thought it was locked is that one of the repairers I took it to said so. We certainly didn't get any error message saying so.

I would just like to say thanks to everybody who has replied.

  • You should have returned the moment you opened and realised it was broken.
