Which Phone to replace a Google Nexus 4?

Looking to replace my wife's Google Nexus 4 phone which is now over 3 years old and starting to play-up.

She uses it mainly for SMS, a few calls, Facebook/Messenger and as a camera.
NO music, movies, or games.

The Nexus 4 handles these ok but she would like a better camera for stills and videos (of the grandchildren):-)

What new phone would you recommend? Maximum price $500.

Thanks.

  • The Motorola G4 or G4 Plus would be a good condidate, but remember that it's a 5.5" phablet which is quite a big jump in size from N4. I bought one for around $330 during the Ebay sale, but it normally retails in Aussie stores for $399 ~ $350 depending on which one you get.

G4 Plus features a fingerprint reader and a better selfie camera over the normal G4, but that's it. The specs are the same.

Software wise it's all fairly stock Android so it should be a fairly easy transition to a Moto G.

  • Short list: Nexus 5X, LG G5, Moto G4/G4 Plus.

    • any reason not a xiaomi mi5?

      • Great phone as is the Redmi Note 3 Pro but with no local support or warranty and no band 28 its appeal is diminished. Wife Acceptance Factor also needs to be considered.

  • Great work holding onto the N4 for so long; I had mine for about 2yrs (8GB model) and it looked after me well. I'd agree with cushydeskjob's list: Nexus 5X, LG G5, Moto G4/G4 Plus.
If wanting to move to iOS (shudder) I'd strongly recommend the SE. Size is similar to the N4 and it's very reliable. Can be had for ~$500 as shown here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/273450 if you're lucky.

  • +1

I'm a N4 user as well - served me great over the years.. Only drawback ended up being space and camera. I have upgraded to 5X - will see what is it like once it arrives.

  • how about oppo F1s?

  • Nexus 5 has been great!

    • Except for the camera and battery life.

Oh, don't take too many photos as storage is limited.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the phone at the time and owned one for 2.5 years.

      • I owned it for 4 months and I sold it, went back to the good old LG G2 for the superior battery life.

        3000mah battery has spoiled me.

  • Been using the 5x for over 6 months now. Going good!

  • Using a Mi5 that I grabbed for 320AUD two weeks back. It works like a charm. Great camera too. You can even install CynogenMod to get near to vanilla experience.

  • Thanks everyone for the input. :-)

  • Ive still got the n4 going as my second phone, although the battery is dieing so it's time to replace.

If you're looking for a similar experience you can't go past an old nexus 5x which will have ample power.

other options if the size is an issue is perhaps a z5 compact or the SE.
