CityRail Fares

Not really a bargain but could potentially save you some cash.

  1. Weekly: Canley Vale – North Sydney = $47 (over 35km)
  2. Weekly: Cabramatta – North Sydney = $37 (under 35km)

I assumed cabramatta ticket is calculating based on the regents park line while canley vale is based on the granville line. Easily save yourself $10 each week. Check your line and see if another station is cheaper!

edit: Check the stations where there are multiple lines, since it will take the shortest distance.

  • I.. don't get it..

  • +2

Cabramatta is 1 station is further than Canley vale station. So if you buy a cabramatta to north sydney ticket, you'll still be eligble to travel between those stations (which canley vale is). I think Fairfield to north sydney is also $47.

    • Wait, so you can buy a ticket to 1 station less than your destination station? i.e. if you needed to go to the 3rd train station, you can buy a ticket for 2 stations instead?

      • I think it only works when there is an anomaly like Cabramatta and Canley Vale due to the way tickets are priced based on some kind of distance. It won't work in general and not when there is only one line to reach the station. As the OP posted, you should check neighbouring stations.

  • cool idea thx

  • Since you don't get extra discount by buying 2 weeks or 4 weeks, might as well stick with weekly and to maximise saving, buy a single on your way to work then buy a weekly on your way back.

A lot of people know about this but couldn't be bothered, in case someone reading this and didn't know, here's how it works (using the above example)…

Most people only make use of 5 days from a weekly, so $37.00/5 days = $7.40/day.

If you buy a weekly after 3pm you get an extra day, but you need a single in the morning, so it works out to be $4.60 + $37.00 for 8 days, minus Saturday and Sunday you only use it for 6 days, so $41.60/6 days = $6.93/day. You save $0.47/day.

Don't do this if the 8th day is a public holiday because it will end up costing you more, $41.60/5 days = $8.32/day.

    • I do this from time to time, but not to save the $0.47/day but mainly to adjust the day I buy my weekly tickets around public holidays.
