4xNAS HDD's - WD 6TB RED etc

Looking to create a new NAS with 4x6TB NAS HDDs.
WD Reds or equivalents. I'm not super fussy on brands, just as long as the specific models are reliable.

My current system blew up this morning and made a bad smell. If it had blown up 9 hours earlier I could have gotten some cyber monday deals :-/
So now its time to build a new system for added redundancy and hope I can recover the data off of the old one!

Sorry for sidetracking, but wow, blew up? Did all the drives die? Did your NAS go on fire?

The reason I ask is because I also have a NAS in my house and it's on 24/7. Given the heat these days, I'm quite worried about it starting a fire to be honest…

    • Blew up might be an exaggeration. I think the power supply died and made the bad smell.
It's hooked up to a UPS which I would have thought would help keep its power supply smooth, but I guess it really wanted a true isolated UPS :-/.

I've been too grumpy/busy to go and do a full investigation so far.

  • I got a great deal on HP ML10 V2 server, you can get them often under $200 with 4-6 bays.. half the price of a less powerfull NAS like Synology. Mine runs Xpenology. Works like a treat.
Current best price I can see is A$199 at Warehouse1.

    • I've got a spare server (2 actually), I just need the drives.
My plan was to build 2 machines and have them in different houses, syncing their data periodically.

    • Is it running DSM 6.2? (Or whatever the latest DSM 6.x release is)

      • Mine runs 5.2? for now. There is a way to upgrade to latest DSM, but havent tried it out yet. Revolves around the BIOS you need to load tricking Synology into believing you an Intel based Synology and map the HW access.

  • Trying to get NAS HDDs on special is an effort in futility - they never seem to go on sale. Been waiting almost a year for a bargain to fit out my G8 :(

    • Warehouse 1 had 19% off over the friday-monday on their nas drives, then my nas died ~8 hours later :-(
I've also seen HDD specials often offered in the comments when the HP NAS servers go on sale.

    • Hi Dogboy, let me know when you're ready to buy and I'll see what I've got left.

  • I've got some WD 6tb Reds for sale now. Can do a great deal for a fellow ozbargainer. PM me…
