Recommendations for Soundbar System in Media Room Budget $1000

My grand daughter is seeking my advice on sound system for her partner in their media room in a soon to be built home. The media room is 3.4 x 3.4m and she has a preference for a sound bar system type due room size. They are in their mid to late 20's and are brand conscious. Budget $1000.

I've always had discrete components and no experience in sound bar systems, so I'm seeking some recommendations for her to consider.

  • JB Hifi stock Bose, Sonos and Polk within your price range:

Makes it easy to demo all the speakers in the one store.

  • If they are brand conscious and intent on spending $1000 then could consider bose 300w soundbar which i'm sure would be more than adequate.

I have a sony soundbar and it works great and is far louder than i need. one similiar to this but if they wait until after christmas/new years there will be a sale. Got mine $350 down from $700 so bound to pick up decent deal soon

Get a Sonos soundbar. During sales you can get one from retail for about $850.

  • I just bought a Yamaha YSP-2500 ( http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/dvd-players/ys… ). It is a 7.1 Surround Sound bar. I cannot believe the sound that comes from this sound-bar+sub unit! True surround sound! Plus it has 4k passthrough and 3 HDMI inputs. This is a slightly older model and so has limited availability.

    Excel Hi-Fi (Refurb): http://www.excelhifi.com.au/ysp-2500-refurbished.html
    Streamaster: https://streamaster.com.au/yamaha-ysp-2500-soundbar-home-the…

For a few more hundred dollars, you can get the newer YSP-2700 which is more readily available.

    Hope this helps!

    • Can anyone explain the science behind how the actual flip a soundbar can produce 8 channels of sound, 7 of which are directionally distinct?

      • Different speakers types are used that produced sound at different tones/ranges. High ,mids and lows @ left & right , plus sub woofer. Think of a large choir where you have sopranos, altos and bassitones and everyonein between. Each one has their own range and together they cover most of what the human ear can hear. If you had groups on both sides of the room then you'd have stereo.

        • This doesn't explain the directional sound, though. When you listen to a single choir in the middle of a stage - you don't hear sound coming from behind you - as you would with a traditional multi-speaker surround setup.

          @johnno07:

The speakers inside the soundbar point in different directions and rely on their sounds reflecting off the walls and ceiling of your room to create the surround sound effect.

  • Thanks for the input, I'll put the suggestions to her. If it was me I'd be favouring the Yamaha after reading the reviews.

  • The media room is 3.4 x 3.4m

May I ask how big the tv is?
