Buy Car Interstate (Buy NSW Register to Qld)

I am planning to do some travelling in NSW for about three weeks. My initial plan is to rent a car. But, I have been planning to buy a car for a while, so I decided I might as well buy one for about 3k while in NSW. (A rental car cost over 1k (three weeks + to drive down to QLD) and insurance etc also cost over 0.5k).

I do not have much experience with cars and registrations etc.

Is this a good idea? Can registration be quite complex…I guess I could go for a cheaper car later and rent a one for the holidays now.

  • Don't quote me but I think you need to get a roadworthy to register in QLD after it having been registered in NSW

you wont be able to transfer the NSW rego into your name without at least adopting a client ID with NSW RMS, for which you will need a NSW residential address.

if you can get the rego transferred into your name then im pretty sure you dont need a Qld RWC to transfer it into your name in Queensland. However, if you bring it into Queensland with NSW rego in someone else's name, you will need a RWC to transfer it into your name.

    usual stamp duty etc applies.

Note that NSW pink slips are less rigorous than Qld RWCs and so a $3k car might pass a NSW pink slip but fail a Qld RWC (and cost thousands to get up to scratch). its a ridiculous system but there you go.

    • Oh, mate, thanks a lot for this info. It is a bit ridiculous if I have do the RWC again and also the standard differ. You probably saved me some money.

Buy one in all and drive it to NSW? Can do Sydney to Brisbane in a day of your keen.

People buy cars from interstate all the time, but probably transfer the rego straight away. If you buy from NSW you may need to transfer to QLD immediately.

    • My plan is to do some travelling/driving in NSW before heading down to Brisbane. One of my concerns is registration etc during the time I buy the car and head down to Brisbane.

      • So you aren't heading to NSW from Qld?

(And not many people say travelling 'down' when they are heading north)

        • :) What North is not up!
          Good point, though.

Haha why the f**k would you want a NSW rego??? Our rego is way more expensive than some of other states (WA, SA to name a few), and you'll need a re-inspection every year

I had a WA-based car which I ran for 2 years, saved me heaps of money and no inspections, but I accidentally let the rego lapse and had to re-register in NSW. Fail!

    • I don't need NSW rego. But I want to drive for a week or some in NSW before head Brisbane.

AH right sorry I understand now what you're doing

There's a few sites (i don't remember the name) where they'll rent you a car for 1month at a time, just a normal person's car

Or you could go with Hire a Bomb (literally a company) and they'll rent you a 2010 car on the cheap
