TRS / GST Refund in Sydney Airport during Holiday

Hi everyone.

How's everyone experience of claiming GST/TRS in Sydney Airport?
Our flight will be in the afternoon, 24 Dec. How bad is the queue if anyone has experienced it?
How long should I allocate time for it?

I know the one in Melbourne is terrible. It took 45-60mins the last time I lined up there - even when I claimed using the apps and that wasnt not in holiday season.

Thanks.

It was ages long last time I was there - a few months ago. Took me about an hour. The main problem is that loads of people line up in the express line even though they haven't done the Online claim processing. Then they get to the front with a 5 meter long receipt and the staff just let them get away with it instead of telling them to go wait in the correct line.

    • In Sydney, they make you queue again. I have seem people swear at staff for that.

Go like an hour before boarding.

  • Last time I went through Perth Airport, they had the option of filling out a form, filling out a self addressed envelope (to return the original receipt), and just leaving the form and receipt for offline processing. No waiting. Not sure if there were conditions (eg must be under a certain value), however they did not ask to see the goods.

    • it has to be below $800 or $1000 I think. I'm not sure 800 or 1000. I did one for around $300 last one this way, did not ask to see the goods, but you have to attach the receipt, eventhough they will send it back to you later. So take a photo of it just in case.

    • When was it? I have never seen this. Is it in Perth only?

  • 8am first Saturday of the July school holidays, I got through TRS at Sydney in 20 minutes in the app queue. I was amazed. Not sure how it was that quick. The other queue was much longer, and mostly Chinese tourists.

    in the afternoon, 24 Dec.

But it sounds like you are going on literally the worst possible day. You are likely to face crowds at every step after you leave your house, not just TRS. I'd go as early as you can check in personally, and try to get lounge passes from somewhere and drink to your success if you make it through quickly.

    • I doubt it will be that busy. I can't imagine too many people are departing on an overseas holiday the afternoon before Christmas. Arriving yes, but departing probably not.

      • Actually, the reverse is true. (Just look up any flight, you would see that flying in on the 24th is cheaper than departing on thee 24th. Seems really odd, but true.)

I went to Sydney TRS 26th Dec at around 6pm last year…

took me no more than 20 minutes.

    • That's really quick. Was it morning/noon/night flight?

  • Got to TRS at 6pm and my flight was around 10pm

  • Hi Lycos - use the TRS app and join a dedicated line. Hopefully, this line is not longer than the normal line because everyone is now using the app 😀

  • We had our claim prepared for lodgement in the app but had to cancel it, due to long queue at SYD last year Christmas time as we had to rush to the gate of our leaving international flight. Allow at least a couple of extra hours solely for refund claim if you wish to have it properly lodged and processed.
