PlayStation 4 Slim Seems to Be Very Hot

Hey guys, I got a PS4 Slim just last Friday and have been having few good sessions with it. Then I realised both sides (top and down) of the unit is very hot towards the rear. Although it is hot to the touch, the fan doesn't make too much noise. So far I haven't seen it shut down due to overheating but some games seem to be a little choppy presumably due to reduced FPS. I'm just concerned with the amount of heat coming from a supposedly more efficient and cool mid cycle update. I had purchased the original vertical stand but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I was wondering if anyone has the same model and if your unit is also hot to the touch. Should I return this and upgrade to the Pro?

  • hard to say as i can't tell hot how your unit is but my original ps4 and my current ps4 pro where all hot none have shut down or overheated though.

The final model of the ps4 Fat version was made that it was hotter while the fan ran slower to reduce noise.
not sure but think the ps4 slim probably about the same despite to improvements it's still a small devices which produces alot of heat.

    • I don't have an IR temperature reader but my guess is around the high 40 degrees C. Yeah I have been searching the internet and it seems to suggest a slower fan to reduce noise.

  • try something heavy loaded like nba2k16, my friend returned 2 ps4 slim due to overheat and lagging.

    • Was it easy to return back to JB Hi-Fi? I'm still within the return period but not sure if 'very hot' is an accepted reason.

  • The PS4 Slim only has one fan to cool it down, and it's not a very large fan either.

It most likely uses the chassis as a heatsink to dissipate the heat, considering how the RAM has pads stuck on it and is touching the housing. The main aluminium heatsink for the processor though is absolutely tiny and probably isn't doing a very good job of cooling the AMD APU, which might be causing it to run slower.

    • there are heat tests if you want data.
they show infrared how hot it gets and where the heat comes from, and compares it to the previous model.
anyway OP is asking for first hand experience.

    • Thanks that was helpful. It does have the internal metal casing directly touching the RAM chips acting as a heat spreader. I guess it would make the casing hot as a result.

  • Thought I should provide an update that I was able to return my PS4 Slim and upgrade to the PS4 Pro. The PS4 Pro is unlike the PS4 Slim when it comes to thermal performance. I am surprised to find that its surface is not hot at all despite playing games for several hours. The exhaust fan does spew hot air (obviously) and I can feel there's a draft at the intake vents. Perhaps the Pro has a bigger chassis and better air flow? Or is this a case of the Pro not working hard enough?

In the case of the PS4 Slim its surface is so hot to the touch and exhaust fan spewing hot air even though it is in rest mode downloading a game. The Pro is even cooler when set in rest mode and downloading a game.
