Bike carrier for roof racks

I'm looking at getting a set of roof racks for my car so I can add a bike carrier to them and transport my Aldi Mountain bike as currently I'm through in it in the back of the little hatch and the bike gets quite dirty.

I'm going to get Rola roof racks but wanted to know what's the best "value" carrier to add on.
I see a few on eBay that seem cheaper but does anyone have any experience with these things?

Also, loving my Aldi bike.

  • Get the rack that attaches to your tail gate instead

Ive seen someone drive into a car park and decorated the carpark ceiling with their bike.

    • I was originally looking at one of those but apparently they can damage the car a bit. Also if be taking it off and reinstalling it all the time which would be a pain. Roof racks can just stay on. (No I wouldn't drive around all day with a bike on top).

      • No tow bar either?

        • No but I did look into getting one just to add a carrier but it's going to cost too much, especially as I wouldn't be able to tow with it.

        • @dan76n: what car?

2015 Kia Rio 3 door hatch.

  • I've used the Rola brand roof rack bike racks before. Work well, but you need to take the front wheel off for the ones I've got (from about 20 years ago), which might mean a muddy wheel in the car anyway.

    • Yeah I did notice the actual Rola bike carrier needs the front wheel off so I wasn't going to get the Rola version.
I'm only after the Rola roof racks as I prefer the stream line version they make and also I have a 3 door Kia Rio and from what I can find online Rola seem to be the only ones who make a set to suit the 3 door.
Also, most of the carriers fit any roof racks.

      • Most brands of roof rack will have an aero profile rack similar to the Rola rack.

My Rola carrier won't fit on a rhino rack with a similar looking shape, I've tried it. The aero bars are just different enough to be incompatible.

  • Thule, rhino & rola ($150 to $300 per rack) all the way.

Can gamble on some cheapo ones $50 off ebay

Some go up on gumtree which you can get for 50% of the price of RRP.
Try and find an Aussie Kia forum and there might be some guys selling a roof rack set that you can pick up for a good price.

I was able to get Thule roof racks + 1 bike rack (fork mount) for my Subie for $350.
Still a hit to the wallet but at half retail and in great nic, I was happy.
