is this a direct replacement for an air-conditioner?

    • +1

      ?
      Its just a fan…

      • +3

        Just a fan costs $20.

I'd pay $100 for a 'built like a brick shithouse' fan with 3ph outrunner motor and bulletproof electronics.
Blades would have to be well designed for excellent airflow and low noise.
Serviceable so as not to end up in landfill, and 10 year warranty.
Alas such a fan does not exist.

You either pay $20 for a piece of shit, or $183.80 for a designer piece of shit.

I agree with the post above, just a fan is $20.

    • That's a bit like asking if a unicycle is a replacement for a bicycle.

  • For the price I recommend dcdimplex
40cm High Velocity Floor Fan. Model: DCFF40B.
46cm High Velocity Floor Fan. Model:DCFF46B

    Good deals on eBay. $90-$100

Or target's imitation of the same $50

I bought a Vornado 660 a few years ago locally for $188.98 + shipping. Fantastic air circulator, but unfortunately it never really seems to go on sale here in Australia. Can be had for much cheaper in the US.

Review here (scroll down a bit):
    http://thesweethome.com/reviews/best-fan/

It used to be the #1 pick for room fans, but better stuff has come along.

If I had to buy a new fan, I'd probably go with Sweethome's current #1 pick, the Seville Classics UltraSlimLine 40” Tower Fan.

Thanks, have been considering a Vornado for a while. I couldn't find an Australian retailer that sold the Sevilles in the past, however just now I looked on eBay and saw a few places offering them.

Ended up pulling the trigger on the slightly newer model Seville that The Sweet Home make mention to but are yet to review:

Hopefully works as well as the #1 review, or close. Looks a bit better aesthetically, IMO.

I've had one of these for 2 years and they are great. They push air much further than any other fan I've had. Good for redirecting the output of an air con unit to another room. But yes they are expensive.

I got one few months ago from Amazon same 660 model for half this price including shipping. Vornados are insanely priced here in Australia and never on a proper sale not sure why. In US they are usually $50-$70 even models with built in heater.

I recommend getting it from US so much cheaper

    • aren't they 120v though from the US?

      • +2

Caveat emptor - there are models with dual voltage or specified voltage only. The fan motor isnt DC, so check the specs before you decide to purchase from overseas.

E.g. Best Buy states 120V AC input.

    • Can you please confirm if you could use it without stepdown transformer?

      • +2

Be very careful here, a step down transformer will fix the voltage but not change the fact that the US power network is 60Hz and Australia is 50Hz. You would risk overfluxing the motor (overheat/burn out). The fan will also spin at a different speed to that intended.

Edit: and I note your question is if it will work without a step down transformer regardless the above warning still applies.

  • The high velocity moretti fans from bunnings throw air just as far at similar noise levels

I've had one for a couple of years and must be one of the few not to like them.

Sure they move a lot of air. But, no remote, no sleep timer, no oscillation (I get the air circulator concept but prefer direct breeze) and all but the lowest setting are too loud for bedroom use.

For this price I would try something else in hindsight.

    • +1 I almost bought one last year after a lot of reading of enthusiastic US reviews. I went to HN and the guy plugged one in for me (it was a lower end model, cos $$$) and it was surprisingly noisy. He admitted he had one and it vibrated noticeably (i appreciated such honesty). For that money, there was no way I was going to go for it. So, I know there are lots of people who like them, but it wasn't for me at all.

I have 5630/633 and 1530 Vornados around the house. I bought one of the 660s a couple of years ago and returned it as the metal bar rattled in its slot. So, you can see I like the Vornado concept, and am used to the sound of these various models - but I don't recommend the 660.

A secondary thing to note is that you can automate a 530/630/633, etc… but not a 660 (there seems quite some interest in wifi control of devices on ozbargain). The 660 has electronic/touch controls that reset whenever the power goes off. In contrast, a 530/630/633 can be locked onto the desired speed and controlled via a Belkin Wemo, etc…

Finally, I was wonderfully surprised by the help I received from the Australian distributor when one of my boys broke a fan-blade: they simply sent me the part for free.

    • Thanks for this, was about to buy a 660. However, if it can't be automated then that makes a huge impact. I love my new smart house and if it doesn't have IR and needs a manual push every time the power resets then it's useless to me.

  • I bought one of these on ebay during the 10% off sale for $162.9 before cashrewards. But if you have AMEX credits with $40 off (which ends tonight) this is a better deal. It will be $141 plus 7% cashrewards.

It's quite good. Better than the $15 pedestal fan I was using, and the breeze per noise ratio was way more positive. The pedestal fan never cooled me. It just blew hot air back at me. It was more effective at full blast, but that was noisy as hell so I never used it.

This I can leave at lowest or second lowest and it's cool enough.

No, it's not a substitute for an air conditioner, but it does a great job cooling for just a fan. It does good enough that I haven't needed to turn on the AC yet. I do want to emphasize that an AC is better, and I'm not implying that you don't need an AC if you have one. But it made me feel better enough that I didn't have to turn on the AC. It doesn't match an AC's performance, but it gets me to a level that leaving the AC off is not intolerable.

So yes, it is very good.

  • Wish these deals were advertised better on OzBargain. Currently the cheapest is $198.95 delivered. David Jones doesn't seem to sell any vornados anymore, based on their dead link websites.
