Huge Price Difference on RAM

So I want to give new life to an older iMac. I reckon 2 x 2gb modules will work. As it is a 2007 model I have identified the RAM that is compatible.

Checking online I have detected that it needs to be PC2-5300 200-pin SO-DIMM

So a bit of searching has revealed

ePowermac = $175.00 + free shipping (unknown brand)

Ramcity = 99.99 + shipping (Crucial brand)

Macfixit = $74.99 + free shipping (OWC brand)

Macram = $104.90 + $8 shipping (unknown brand)

$100 difference for cheapest to most expensive! wow

Any suggestions or experience with these companies? or reliability with brands?

Thank you

  • Speaking as an Ozbargainer: Just buy as cheap as possible with RAM. RAM brands don't really matter that much.

    For a computer nearly a decade old, do you really want to be spending $175 dollars on memory upgrades?

    (Calculated, $100 for 2x2GB modules, that's $25 dollars per gig of RAM, when modern DDR4 memory is something like $6.55 per gigabyte of RAM)

    You're already getting screwed over on pricing due to the supply/demand curve.

  • Have you tried ebay?

  • After I posted the above I found it on eBay for $26.99 + free shipping! (Samsung brand - brand new). So I have gone ahead and purchased it (+ Cashrewards)

    • If I had the right sticks i would have give mine to you for free.

      I've got quite the collection of old slow DDR3 SODIMMS.

  • Do you know the chipset/ mother board details?
    This could help in determining if there is a compatible memory that's cheaper.
    I think any ddr 2 laptop compatible ram should work.
    Usually the chipset will support a range of ddr speeds and a higher speed rated ddr can operate at a lower speed also. You can use PC2 8000, PC2 6400 instead of PC2 5300.
    Try amazon.com as well.

    • Try this or a cheaper one if you find it. Trust me if you are asking these questions you don't need more expensive higher ram.

  • $100 difference for cheapest to most expensive! wow

    Is this the first time you've bought things online?

  • Based on all the information you have provided, go with crucial.
