PS4 Pro Vs PC Gaming with Controller

So I'm currently in a dilemma where I really want to buy a console and I've been wanting a PS4 for a very long time.
But the reason why I've never given in and still am unsure is because the only reason you'd buy a console is for the exclusive games right? like little big planet, ratchet, and the last of us.

But due to the little selection of games that I do want to play, I am having difficulty justifying the reason to purchase the console.

Should I just buy a controller for the PC instead? I do have a capable enough gaming computer.
Anyone else in a similar situation or have any advice?

The only reason to buy a console is if you reaaaaalllly love certain exclusives, FFXV is the only game that would make me consider buying a current generation console. Or you want to play with friends and they have consoles but no gaming PC for some reason. Otherwise you're much better off with your gaming PC, obviously FPS games and the like are better with keyboard and mouse anyway but if you like controllers for particular genres just hook one up to your PC.

    • I only got a PS4 for the upcoming KH3… still waiting…

FPS games and the like are better with keyboard and mouse anyway

On another note… There is actually a kbm for PS4 from Hori

      Yep, the whole discussion is:

Can't live without certain exclusive games? All your friends you want to play online with play only on console?

      Console.

      Everyone else?

      PC.

  • I have an idea, if you are certain that you'd want to grab a PS4 instead of XBOX One if gaming with PC doesn't work out, why not grab a Dualshock 4 and the wireless dongle for PC and see how it is? If it doesn't work out, you end up with a spare controller.

Or you could go for XBOX 360 wired controller which would be dirt cheap right now, if you can find one. I've heard from people that XBOX controllers are kinda the controller to go for PC because a lot of PC games support them. That was before Steam Controller was released, so things may have changed. I think getting a XBOX 360 controller might come out better depending on what games you play.

From what I can see, you can try PC gaming with a controller at far cheaper price than getting a console, I'd probably try the cheaper option first if I were in your position.

    • Can you get the dual shock to work if you play from PC?

Yes, I got mine to work as well. Try using the software in the link below… I'd suggest getting the latest version though.

        • Interesting. I'll keep that in mind

@bich.light: If that doesn't work, there's always googling "how do i use a DS4 on a PC?". Seems to work fine at least for Win 10.

      • I think Sony released a wireless dongle for DS4, that said, whether games support it or not depends on the game. That said, XInput wrapper and such does allow it to work with the games like a XBOX controller I've heard.

  • Bloodborne, Uncharted, Final Fantasy, The Last Guardian?

  • If you have the money and want to play the exclusives, go for it.

    • This is where I'm stuck as I don't earn a lot of money.
I mean I kind of do but do I really want to be spending what money I do earn on a console?

Its just the exclusives I really want to play but I guess I'm just struggling for the notion of paying that much for them.

      • What exclusives do you want to play?

I'm like you, I've always been into pc gaming, but my machine it's aging now (6 years old) and the cost of upgrading to play a few newer games is not worth it to me. So I went and bought a ps4 earlier in the year and I love it!

I can't play fps on it (hopeless with controller) so I play them on the pc but there's not many of them I play anyway and I'm not into competitive multiplayer.

So far I've played the uncharted games, the last of us, Diablo 3 (awesome with a controller), the witcher 3, a couple of platformers, no man's sky, and currently playing dishonored 2 on it.

If I could afford a pro I would get one. From what I've read though a pro isn't probably worth it right now whereas you could pick up a cheap non pro ps4 either used or new. I've seen people selling them for $200 second hand - $300 with games, or jump on one of the numerous new ps4 deals here

        • Yeah I'm more or less in the same boat with you.

Uncharted, last of us and platformers. But not sure where witcher 3 is best experience, controller or pc.

          @bich.light:

Probably going to sound bias but if you care only for the story, any platform is fine. If you want to see all the beautiful scenery and stuff, you will need a high end PC. Having control over anti aliasing is what makes PC gaming great IMO.

        • @ProjectZero: Yeah I mainly care for the story but I do like higher graphics haha. But as before, there are the exclusives that I want to play :(

I have both a PC and PS4 but I do find myself playing the PS4 more as I find it easy to just turn on and play. At the end of the day it is preference though. PC gaming can be quite expensive for good hardware but the games themselves can be significanty cheaper than on console. Another negative for PC can be stability some games might not work with your PC correctly and you have to screw around with drivers etc or you can have random OS issues as well that get in the way and waste time, so if this is going to annoy you then I would go with a console.

    • Totally agree with this. Also you get more life out of a console. Granted it is not as long as you would expect on PS1/2 (avg 10 years?) because these days the market is so competitive. But still 6+ years (looking back PS3?) is a reasonable lifecycle. On the PC side, you probably need to upgrade your graphics card in about 2 years, CPU+MOBO upgrade every 3-4 years and all the smaller upgrades in between (e.g. SSD, PSU)? That's assuming you want the absolute highest quality eye candy. Otherwise you're looking at downgrading graphics quality 1-2 big steps per generation of games.

"On the PC side, you probably need to upgrade your graphics card in about 2 years …. "

Just FYI, this is a common topic when PC vs console is talked about, and it's totally wrong.

People upgrade their PC because they can. Brand new game came out, holy wow the benchmarks are brutal, better get a new card! The new Batman game has in-game physics for smoke and his cape, it looks awesome, better upgrade to latest Nvidia! A lot of upgrades happen because they CAN happen. Every single component can be upgraded. Got a new monitor? Guess you need new GPU's too.

Nothing is forcing you to upgrade. I'm running a 6-7yo platform (first-gen i7, enthusiast, it still rocks), and I didn't NEED any upgrades. It'd still play games in roughly the same visual quality as 6 years ago. But, visuals improved, so I improved my rig.

"Otherwise you're looking at downgrading graphics quality 1-2 big steps per generation of games."

PC graphics are the market leaders - they keep pushing the envelope. Nothing is forcing you to keep up with these increases. Sidenote: 4K is all the rage? You actually need $1800 of GPU alone to come close to playing everything at max details. Nothing is forcing you to do this, and upgrade the next year, and next year …

      • Is that why MS and Sony are releasing revamped version of current generation consoles 3 years down the line?

    • I would add to this although pc games can be a lot cheaper, with physical console games you can trade or resell them to recoup some of the cost after you have finished playing them. Many places have gaming buy/sell/swap groups, just do a search on Facebook to see if there is such a group in your area

    Also love it.
No one votes XBox One hahahahha

  • Seconds xbox controller. If you have a major xbox controller, most games are exactly the same as playing on xbox , they'll even have the x y a b prompts

I have a beefy gaming PC but still play ps4 a moderate amount. Sunk a couple hundred hours into Bloodborne and recently finished TLOU. Played a lot of Destiny. Other than that I sometimes play online with friends and use it as a Netflix/media box. I feel like I'm getting my money's worth given how much I've used it.

That said, most of my gaming is still done on PC with an Xbone controller. Games are a little cheaper, graphics can be better (depending on your machine) and the Xbone controller works really well with it.

So far the ps4 has been useful in allowing me to connect with friends and to enjoy a couple of cool exclusives. I'd say get it if these things appeal to you. Otherwise put the money towards your PC or some other shiny thing :)

  • TLOU2, FFXV, Uncharted. These games alone make the PS4 worth it alone. I also have a decent PC but most of my mates play PS4. PC is for the hardcore gamers and if I want to relax in front of a TV the PS4 is the way to go.
