Any recommendations for a wideangle shooter?

Hello Ozbargainers,

I have developed this interest of buying a gadget which i can use for wide angle stills (mostly)

Please recommend a gadget within reasonable price range but can take good quality stills.

Anything that can be carried everywhere

I have a Nikon d5100 (with non wideeangle lens though….)

    Your question is unclear - what do you mean by "gadget"? A wide angle lens for Nikon D5100?

    With a 1.5 crop factor most decent wide angles will lose their effectiveness.

    The best Lens is indisputably the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 for DX.

    For toys check out the Lensbaby Scout and Fisheye add ons but they may not work well on that body

      U may want to consider sigma 8-16mm too which is the widest non fish eye lens for crop sensor cameras

        The Sigma 8-16 is slightly wider but also slightly less sharp than the Tokina 11-16.Tokina also has the newer more expensive 11-20, but both are very good.

          In the world of ultra wide angle, 3mm (or 4.5mm in aps-c) is not just slightly wider. In terms of sharpness, some say sigma is sharper if you got a good copy, but in real world application, I wouldn't worry about the sharpness too much, you can't really notice the difference anyway.

          The real question is, what kind of photography is OP into? if you like shooting the night sky, go for Tokina, if f/2.8 is not needed, Sigma is unbelievably wide.

          Thanks for the input my friend.

          I want to capture landscape and ourselves in photos as well. Like us with more background in photos would be awesome. I hate loosing background with kit lens.

          Do you think getting an action camera will do the justice? I was looking at sony as200v for wideangle photos (i know its an action camera and not meant for quality photography)

          Confused between Tokina and Sigma at the moment…

    tokina 11-16mm F2.8 incredibly fast auto focus, and all metal lens body.. not sure about the sigma 3-8mm

    this lens never leaves my camera bag
