push button cistern not flushing - toilet help.

hi,

I have a push button cistern (not the traditional ballcock design).

it is filled with water, but when i push the buttons (full flush/half flush) then nothing happens.

it was working fine earlier.

I've taken the top off and pushed down on the internal thing-o and still it won't flush.

any suggestions for fixing this? (google mostly talks about ballcock issues)

thanks

  • Google has a lot of ballcock.

  • +2

I searched google for "ballscock" and nothing I saw related to toilets…

There is typically a shaft inside that can sag or even crack after a lot of abuse. Maybe gently tug it to see if the linkages or mechanism has gone limp.

  • Yes. Sometime the lugs where it pivots come off or stretch or crack. I'm a nurse and managed to jury rig the mechanism a few times till I bought the whole innards from Bunnings and replaced it. Comes as a one piece kit if your toilet cistern is still a current make

    • This is correct. Turn off the water, rotate the entire cistern mechanism to unscrew it from the tank, then take it to the hardware shop.
They will have a wall full of little bits that will replace worn out parts, or worse case, will sell you a complete drop in replacement for about $30.
If you need to flush in the meantime, you can just tip a bucket of water (I had to tell my kids this, as they had never considered just what a toilet did).

      • finally got around to fixing it today. the arms that held the plastic thing that held the "plug" (at the bottom of the cistern mechanism) had broken off. the plastic thing had then flushed down the pipe into the rim of the bowl. I disconnected the pipe between the cistern and bowl. retrieved broken plastic "plug" holder. araldited it back in place - let it dry for 6 hours. refitted the mechanism and the toilet is now flushing.

the kids hated using the second toilet as it at the back of the laundry and dark and spooky. (can relate to that).
