Dell Desktop Vs. Centrecom Desktop at ~ $650

I'm picking out a basic desktop for my Mum and have identified the following two models which seem like they might be good.

Dell currently has a sale on its small Inspiron Desktops, and are selling this model at $649:

Meanwhile Centrecom has a very similar computer for $679.

The Dell has the better processor, but the Centrecom comes with an SSD to put the OS and programs on. They're otherwise very similar, unless I'm missing something. Do any of you have any thoughts?

Your mum isn't going to really appreciate the faster Core i5 CPU (unless she plans to play with photo / video editing), but the SSD makes a pretty big impact on how quickly a computer boots and opens apps.

That being said, It's unknown what brand of SSD they use. If they are using a shitty Kingston V300, that particular SSD is notorious for being quite slow and only marginally faster than a HDD.

The CentreCom system is also using a regular ATX case, which allows for more upgrades down the road (e.g more drives, GPU's and whatnot), while the Dell system is an SFF case and only has limited room for another HDD and a low profile GPU.

Also. This is a better deal than the one you've linked, $599. Core i5 + SSD.

    • Thanks for your thoughts! Your link is now showing a price of $679 for me.

How do you know the Dell has room for another HDD? Those empty slots visible at the back of the computer?

Turn to Page 20 of the service manual

It shows you how to remove or replace the HDD.
The drive cage may store a large sized drive alongside a small 2.5 inch SSD.

        • Thanks for tracking that down. It does look like it was room for both a 3.5inch and a 2.5inch at the same time. I think I'll go with the Dell with the option to put in a non-shitty SSD at a later date.

The Dell has a smaller and nicer form factor too, but mostly up to personal preference, i'd go the dell

I've bought a lot of Dell desktops in my life and can vouch for their reliability. Infact most of the ones I bought have been handed down to family friends and they are still running.
