Can You Exchange Japanese Yen in Australia outside The Airport?

Hi,

I have a friend in Japan to whom I lent some money last year. (I lived in Japan for many years.) He is coming to visit Melbourne for his first visit (he has received PR), and he said he will bring that money to give back to me. It's JPY 200,000.

I am wondering, can I exchange that money myself to AUD or should he do it at the airport and give AUD to me? The JPY has dropped a bit in this month and I am not keen in exchanging it ASAP if I can do it a bit later.

If I can do it here myself, where can I do that? Can I do it a bank? Or do I have to go somewhere else? Do I need any documentation, as proof of source etc?

Cheers

  • Airport exchange booths give poorer rates. Do it outside. For about $2000, nobody will ask questions.

This is my favourite place to exchange foreign cash.

  • Plenty of money exchangers in Melbourne CBD. Avoid the airport due to captive rates.

  • Awesome info guys. I will do it myself then.

So, any other recommendations in addition to unitedcurrencyexchange.com.au?

I live near Chadstone and hardly visit the CBD. What about these guys?

    • I would buy them off you if you are selling? :D

Going in May… I need the yens!

      • A yen for yens huh? Aussie dollar dropped today, good for OP, not so good for you.

        • What is a yen for yens? :/

See what OP says I guess? OP might not want to sell now, but I've been exchanging them here and there… since Oct… (I've only just returned from Japan in Sept as well) I go to japan every year… I need the yens regardless.. hahaha

OP - would you like to sell? (It's almost as if I am proposing.. hahaha)

        • @nightfever: Currency romance on OzB. Who would have thunk it?

        • @greenpossum: hahahahahha, god. I don't want to bring out that grammar police!!!

GREENpossum… why green, not blue, red or rainbow? Hahahaha

@nightfever: Everybody has to be some colour. Green was unlucky to get me.

      • Sure why not? Inbox me. (I had messaging turned off before without knowing it, now it is on)

  • Your bank should be able to do it to. It's only if it's a large amount that you may need to call before hand.

    • Are the bank rates not as good as the ones offered by outside exchangers? That's what I thought.

      • Bank rate is TERRIBLE!

        • That's what I thought too.
