airlines/travel agents/tour operators/wholesalers dumping airline seats at last minute

noticed recently wholesalers dumping seats to USA in Xmas school holidays very cheap(we bought some), but airlines don't want to get into this game, otherwise many people would hold off booking, in mistaken belief that airfares will get cheaper closer to departure.

Does anyone know of any other instances (apart from at start of GFC around end of 2007) of any airlines dumping seats for last minute travel for peak season, when most airlines surely make all their profits ?

(by last minute am thinking 2 months or less from departure date)

  • Any examples of wholesalers/cheap tickets you're willing to share (especially since you've already booked them)?

I found tickets to Europe with less than 2 weeks notice during Xmas holidays for under 1800 on a full service airline (Lufthansa) which was rather unexpected.

yeh, posted a deal, but few people said it wasn't a great deal, as should travel in non-peak period, when it's always cheap, but that isn't an option with school aged kids.

    • The examples in your deal are for returning in late January. You can often get cheap fares in late January.

      • yeah no talking peak season, like to Europe. Has anyone sen any deals in Xmas school holidays ?

Are you associated with your friends on the last Post?

    • what ?

      • Any good deals for Thredbo?

  • 2 months is last minute?

I rarely book flights more 1-3 weeks in advance.
Most are booked within a week of travel, at an extreme 2-3 weeks in advance.

good luck with that. Many flights in peak season are well & truly overbooked & you can't even buy a full priced ticket on some flights.

      • Thanks, haven't had a problem in over a decade.

Only fly about six times a month, so I'm a bit new to this flying thing.

used to fly twice a week domestically, but internationally have seen people with confirmed bookings not get on.

Meaning, if flights are near 100% or maximum load factor, the fares will be expensive.
