Prepaid Mobile plan for teenager

I have finally relented and bought a smart phone outright for my 16 year old son, but he will be responsible for paying the actual phone account. Therefore, I’m seeking some advice in terms of pre-paid phone plans.
Being a usual 16 year old, phone and text won’t be the most used function on the phone, so he’ll be after data. I don’t want him to be bill-shocked at any stage, but empower him to make his own decisions in regards to his usage. He’s also very sensible and is already using WiFi wherever he can leech, and has even worked out how to use Telstra Air (using my account) when he's out and about.

Here’s what I’d really like:

  • 1-2GB per month
  • Ability to roll-over unused data
  • Once the data limit is hit, it must be topped up to continue (not automatic)
  • Usage notifications
  • Cheap! Not fussed about network provider as 99.9% of the time he’ll be in a capital city

Are vouchers still an option nowadays, just in case we don’t want to use a bank account?
Thanks in advance

Kogan Mobile Medium plan - 3GB, unlimited calls and text
    https://www.kogan.com/au/koganmobile

Pay 12 months in advance, works out to be $17.50 a month.

    • Tell him to use his Xmas money for it lol

  • That's exactly the intention - he'll be using his own money to pay for his usage. Now he's got a part-time job he's on his own :)

  • Vaya and Kogan have 12 month plans at the moment, around $10/month for 1GB of data and unlimited calls & SMS.

Perfect to avoid bill shock. I believe both can be setup for not automatic data popup (though does that mean it cuts out, or it instead racks up per MB rather than doing an add-on, I don't know)
