Weird texts from an Australian number

A couple days ago, I got a text from a pretty normal looking number, referring to me as T. Thinking it was just someone texting to the wrong number, I ignored it.

Today, my friend messaged me about someone messaging her and calling her T, so I was a bit curious. My texts from the number read:

'T'
'I thot we gos to maccas where u be at T?'

I sent her what my messages read and the number, and they matched up.

Later today, I got:

'Yo T it's been like a thousand years!'
'U tink I didnt nodis u be w taylor?'
'Yo y u not pick me up from dentist?!!!'
'Just got wisdom tooth out like were u at brah!!!!'
'dentists be freaky man…'

Somewhat amusing and creepy at the same time. Someone very bored with a bot sending messages, or something more harmful?

Number ended in 74822. Mod: Removed full number

Anyone else ever get this?

It's just someone who can't speak English, don't worry about it T.

Unless you and your friend has subscribed to something real strange, it just sounds like one of your mutual friends is playing a prank on both of you.

    • This.

Also how long have you had your number? When I activated a new cheap SIM just for the data, I would find missed calls, even a couple from Zimbabwe. Presumably due to the previous owner. I don't know what they said, it all went into voicemail which I didn't bother to retrieve. They've given up now.

      • I do the OzBargain way of getting a new sim for new credit :)

        • Was more lucrative in the past. However I'm not a store or streaming junkie so don't really miss it.

  • I used to work proramming/testing phones and we had a large set of test phones. About 2% had numbers with stalkers of the previous owner. Telling them the number had changed backfired and they persisted harder.

  • I don't think the random person who mistakenly texted your number will appreciate you putting their number up on Ozbargin. I'd remove the number if I were you, you wouldn't like someone posting your number online.

  • Sounds like someone thinks you're Tony Soprano

  • I had a similar thing happen a while back. Someone started texting me repeatedly, with increasing insistence, and trying to make me feel bad for not texting back. I wondered if it was trying to trick me into texting back or calling - I theorised that if I called the number, it might turn out to be one of those numbers that are super expensive to call, but I don't know for sure. I would suggest just ignoring it.

Kind of reminiscent of "Text message scams" as mentioned here: http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/protect-yourself/mobile-pho…

    • Yeah, that's exactly what it's like for me here. I've stuck to just ignoring the number and hoping it will end eventually.
