Prescription Glasses Frame Only - BUPA

Hi

I am with BUPA and have intermediate cover of extra. I don't need new glasses every year and hence I was wondering whether it is possible for me to just buy the frame using the allocation of $200 in one year and then get the lenses done next year.

Last two years I went to specsavers and just to use the allocation of extra i had to buy the $199 for 2 frame/lenses offer. Those are not simple lenses (i.e. not high indexed etc etc) and the frames are pretty ordinary too.

Has anyone been able to do that? Pls advise from where - I am in sydney.

  • No you can't. Needs prescription lens in them. I asked in store. Even tried saying buy Dec 31 then Jan 1 pay the rest. Nope no go

  • They charge a mint to just do lenses anyway. You'd be gaining nothing. When they claim through bupa each item is itemised and Bupa pays a set amount for each item. They won't pay out $200 on just frames anyway.

    • Agree. Depending on the individual policy, I suspect the limit for just the frame is probably gonna be something like $100. Whichever frame OP can get at that price (if they even exist) is only gonna be mediocre.

Have family or friend who has been to specsavers in last 6 months or less? They would have been given a 'golden ticket' which gives friends 25% off.

  • I have claimed just the frames. The price was still almost the same though, only minus $30 or something. My prescription is high, so I told them upfront I cant afford getting the lenses done in Australia. They let me just buy the frames.

    • Was that at specsaver? If so, where?

Am wondering if another shop would be able to do this? I know people who have medibank have been able to do it - not quite sure how.

      • yeah Specsaver. I bought them from North Sydney store. I'm pretty sure I did it twice. Probably Hurstville? But last year I bought them from North Sydney.

        I'm with Bupa btw.

Just say you can't afford ultra thin lenses and will buy the lenses overseas when you go on holiday.

  • +1

Guys - thought I will update.

I calked few stores spec savers/opsm etc and from my experience, the best deal if you want frame only is available with Bupa Optical store.

Reason being with them out of your total allowed max limit, you can claim more, they give $50 off frame cost for frame less than $350 and $100 for frame more than $350. As a result, you can get nice branded frame for fairly effective cost.

    Hope it helps.

    • Which BUPA store was this at? They allow to claim only frames? What did you say?

      • All of them allow to claim frames only - its just out of your total limit you would be only able to claim the limit of frames. I went to the one on george street in sydney.

Like for my plan total limit is $200 - out of that i can get frame of up to $168.

    • Hi , could you clarify this for me
Are you saying for frames purchased at Bupa optical for less than $350 you can only claim up to $50? Or since you are on Bupa you get an additional $50 off the frames on top of the claim amount which on your plan was $168?

I have seen a pair or frames at Costco for around $150 which I intend to get and hopefully claim 100% on Bupa and will fit the lenses overseas.

      • Get an additional $50 off for frames below $168 but only if you purchase from Bupa store
