Oil seeping through car floor?

Hi all, noticed the rear right car floor of my Forester soaked with "oily liquid". It doesn't smell though, but you can tell the newspaper I put underneath the floor mat is "oil-soaked". Any idea if that could be leak from underneath the car? Cheers!

  • Any chance you have a sunroof? If so, drop the headliner a bit and see if the drain hose is still attached.

    • no sunroof

  • Can be the rubber from the floor mat not being 'set' and so it will continually melt.

    • I thought of that too, but how come only one side though?

      • You tell me, that one mat could be faulty.

Is your car manual? Brake master or clutch master could be leaking, check if it's coming from the drivers side, then track it upward towards the top of the pedal arm. Your sunscreen tube could have exploded :)

let me know how you go.

    • it's auto though

      • could possibly be a brake master then, check brake master fluid, check fluid on floor, usually it makes your skin feel different, check if it matches, wash hands.

  • I've had this happen with power steering fluid

    Blinker fluid maybe?

    Hi Droid

This is unusual to say the least and you need to get to the bottom of it.

Firstly, I suggest putting down heaps of kitchen paper towels to soak up whatever-it-is that's leaking. Paper towels are white and will show up the oils and the color clearly.

This will give you an indication as to the type of oil leaking. For eg.

    Power steering (Reddish brown),
Auto Trans Fluid (reddish brown with sweet odour),
Engine oil (brownish black with sooty appearance & carbon smell),
Brake Fluid (light yellow or golden colour).
Radiator Coolent (Red or Green, but NOT Oily)

I cannot think of any other oils cars would have internally to give you the leak problem.

Also check under the hood and Make ABSOLUTELY sure your reservoirs are all filled to the correct level. Forbid that you should be driving and discover you have no more power steering or brakes due to the leaks.

Good luck and all else fails, an auto mechanic visit is called for.

PS. Once discovered in the gear shifter a sticky black gluey substance that was unknown to me until I found out it was spilled dried Coca-Cola that was never wiped up lol.
