why is it every parents nightmare?
Bali can be a decent destination if the people travelling know how to behave, adhere to local customs and laws and be respectful.
Oh I think they should responsible enough to get their own travel insurance if they are responsible enough to travel to another country.

For travel insurance deals use an aggregator and be sure to use ozb to search for active coupon codes.

still, even if you behave there are lots people who are not, could be just some unfortunate event. why not pick somewhere else safer?
it is hell, not just nightmare.

        This can apply to anywhere.

Where would you classify as safer?

Under30stravelinsurance.com.au is fairly good and cheap. They go through 1cover or Allianz so its legit. Otherwise just try an insurance comparison website like https://www.comparetravelinsurance.com.au/

Not sure what there is to be afraid of unless your son is a menace himself. I can think of a million dodgier places than Bali.

Young couple on a motorcycle taken out by a car the other day. Driver left the scene, girl will need extensive facial work.

Accidents can happen anywhere, in Australia we are covered by Medicare. Not sure if general insurance covers motorcycles though, in most cases prob Aussies riding in Bali unlicensed.

If you're riding a motorcycle in any country unlicenced then you're a retard. Bali's traffic isn't horrific compared to other parts of Asia but yeah avoid a motorcycle if you aren't mega experienced.. There seem to be a lot of people with no experience thinking that they can travel all of Asia on their newly acquired $200 underbone. One word, retards.

Thats the thing that i dont get. People wont ride in Australia cause they say its too dangerous and would never do it, then they go overseas to a country where they have no road rules and second rate health care and they jump on without a licence or any training going its part of the culture.

          stupid

Most travel insurances state that they wont cover motorcycle related injuries - i know when i went to england i checked this and it was the case

The insurance companies that do won't cover you unless you have a motorbike license and are legally allowed to ride in the country you are visiting. I had to pay about $30 extra for the motorbike cover option recently.

On top of this you need to get a temporary International Licensse from an automotive club even if you have an Australian motor bike license. If the country you are going to doesn't recognise the international license, then you need to get a local one (Cambodia is an example). Too much hassle for the average tourist, but can be worth it for expats.

Its nice of your girlfriend to take your son to Bali.
I hope they have fun - but not too much.

      Ha ha.

Bali is one of the safest places I have visited. Most Aussies that encounter problems do so due to their own stupidity eg: buying drugs, buying local alcohol (arak), going to shitty nightclubs and riding around on motorbikes with no helmets. Encourage your son to get out of the arse end that is Kuta and explore the island.

Travel insurance won't cover you riding a bike unless you are licensed in aus… So unless he has a full bike licensed here, tell him to catch taxis. Or hire a car if he has his full car licensed.

    Southern Cross have good reviews.

Lots of travel insurance will not even cover you riding a bike even if you do have a licence. If they are going to do this they must check the T&C

There is a saying that if you can't afford travel insurance you can't afford to travel. Accidents, and incidents, do happen even to people being incredibly careful so don't listen to the people here who tell you that it isn't needed. The cost of airlifting someone from overseas is horrifically expensive so make sure there is plenty of health cover in whatever you choose. Also have a good look at the fine print and make sure your son does as well. People assume they are always going to be covered but things like hang gliding, motorbike riding, etc might be exclusions. I hope he has a fun time (but maybe not too much fun).

Check with your health fund for travel insurance.

as a parent, my worst nightmare is my kids paying retail prices…

Be wary that most travel insurance won't pay out when the person 'is under the influence'

How were the tickets purchased? Most credit cards have included travel insurance, and the platinum ones tend to have better insurance. Amex platinum edge insurance is pretty good (from what I've dealt with - smashed phone screen).
Check the PDS of the insurance to see what is included, you might not need to get anything else.
Also, if he is a commonwealth bank gold, platinum or diamond card holder he can get free insurance with CBA without spending any money (if you are a member I think you would have to go with them).

I can recommend 1cover.com.au - they paid out with no fuss for doctor visits to our hotel when a family member was quite ill. Check also if the insurance company you use has restrictions on delays due to the Mt. Rinjani volcano ash cloud - 1cover was one of the few who would cover this when we travelled. Good to keep an eye on as it tends to flare up every now and then & could be costly if he got stuck there for a few extra days. Just make sure your son is aware that the best of Bali lies outside of Kuta & I'm sure he'll be fine! Note - with 1cover he can also refer his girlfriend for an extra $20 off her policy.

We have used 1cover before, but had a few small issues that were hard to resolve so we have used HBF since. Price was within a few dollars of each other, plus HBF will cover our daughter with a pre-existing medical condition (condition not covered) for normal travel insurance.

Don't whatever you do let your beloved travel overseas without insurance. My friend from Singapore has a son who was travelling to Phuket for a 3day holiday in a couple of years back. Just before he left my fried asked if he had insurance. When the son replied No, my friend rang an insurance company and took out a policy for one week. It cost $55. Best money he ever spent. The boy had a horrendous m/c accident with severe damage to his leg. $50,000 of hospital bills later, he left Phuket and returned to Singapore about a week later. They pinned his leg but a scan in Singapore showed the pin was bent and had to be removed and replaced. It was a good hospital in Phuket but things do go wrong at times. Be warned!
