New house 3km from Exchange. What are my options?

Dear Ozbargainers Family,

I just moved to a new suburb (Hadfield) and choose Optus Adsl service. The speed i am getting is 1.26Mbps downloading and uploading is in Kbps. I called them up but they replied they can not do anything about it and I can look for other ISPs

Called TPG and they said the same about speed that I will get through them.

Any suggestions about fast internet will help. Currently on a 60 dollors adsl unlimited plan with optus

  • Does you area have nbn or will it have nbn?

What about optus or telstra cable.

  • Glass half full - you're still getting 20 times faster than the max 56k you'd get on dial up. It's a lot more expensive, but mobile data may be your fastest option. There's usually plenty of cheap Telstra and Optus sim deals on here and just use adsl for large downloads.

    • Paying 60 for adsl and 60 more for phone data?

We want a good solution like Fast Adsl or NBN.

  • Check if you can get NBN.

If not check if you can get Optus or Telstra cable by typing your address into their respective "can i get cable" pages. It's worth trying another address on the same street if your address isn't coming up - sometimes their addresses are not up to date.

For Telstra you should be paying $109 per month for 1TB (uploads metered), 100Mbps down for 24 months commitment. although they will insist you should pay more/get less until they realise your not the usual Telstra sucker customer (just continually repeat 1TB, 100Mbps, $109.95 regardless of the bullshit they tell you). Also if you push them you can have setup, technician and modem fees waived although this can take months of negotiating. The (mandatory) modem is useless as a router btw so budget for another router unless you already have one. It's worth noting that at 100Mbps the router can become the bottleneck for the connection in certain situations (programs using many connections such as bittorrent for example)

If you cannot get cable then Vivid Wireless for 90 bucks a month 10/1 unlimited is better than adsl.

  • Optus mobile broadband might be an option?

  • Don't just type your address in their pages, call them too. Sometimes it doesn't come up because your suburb shares a postcode and it doesn't compute. My billing is my address but different suburb, still works.

  • Have you tried a different modem, as some chipsets are better on long lines?
Asked neighbours what sync rate they have?
What are your modem stats (Attenuation etc) ?
Goto https://www.communications.gov.au/what-we-do/internet/nation… and click on "National Map" then go to your address and click on it and see what it says.

  • Are you sure you can only get DSL? Most people seem to think DSL is the only option.

First of all I'm assuming you mean Hayfield in Melbourne,Victoria? Well I just type in some address in the Hayfield area and Cable is an option so go check if Optus/Telstra offers it. If you can get it you can get up to 100mbps+ with it.

If not, theres Wireless Broadband, you can get up to 25mbps with that.

  • +1

Check cable and nbn availability. If none check wireless like vividwireless or even mobile 4G if you are willing to spend a bit more.

If still nothing then perhaps move again, to a better suburb (and I'm serous, I wouldn't live in a suburb that's an internet dead zone)

  • No cable internet, no NBN availability..
