Now That Masters Has Officially Closed. How Did You Find The Closing down Sale?

There has been some interesting comments over the last few months regarding the closing down sale at Masters, things like poor bargains, no stock, rude staff and other small issues..

So all stores shut as promised on/before the 11th December, and completely ran out of stock! Which means the sale was successful!

So I'm sure a few people got bargains, had interesting experiences or had a terrible time.

So tell me what bargains you scored, what you missed out on, or even what crap did you buy just because it was cheap?

I bought a baby gate and baby safety stuff for around the house at 60% off, saved around $90 off what competitors were

I also ended buying around 10 power boards, at around $2 each

The brother in law bought a 4 burner BBQ boxed for $225, when they retailed for $499

There were a few things I eyed off, like a spare gas hot water service, but when i went, I missed out, oh well.

    lots of paint & primer

    • yep, lots and lots of paint and primer

      • no tint though

  • Wait Masters is closed?

  • Waste of time.
the shit they were trying to sell towards the end should have just ended up on the skip bin. Broken boxes, odds and ends.

The whole sale process was an interesting game. The store was full of product when the 'fire sale' was announced, but it was at best 10% off. Why bother? Stock stayed on the shelves. At 20% off customers became interested, but they knew the discounts would increase with time. But how long would you wait? Buy now and pay more, or wait until next week for another 10% off and risk not getting the product at all?

I purchased a few small items, but Masters arrived in Adelaide a year after I finished furnishing and landscaping a new house. Too late.

I did score 14L of paint for $75 (50% off) and some tiles that were about $14 per sqm when they were no less than $30 per sqm elsewhere. But this was right back at the start of the announcement.

  • Bloody awful

    Pathetic discounts

    Rude and confused staff

    Management not managing

Whoever was responsible for winding up Masters had no clue what they were doing

Plenty - Insulation, tapware, lights, door knobs, paint/ primer, tool chest, external powerpoint, roller blinds, bits and bobs, and lots of rope to start my own '50 shades of …'
All at prices way cheaper than Bunnings.

I visited many stores in Perth and found that some store have things that other stores didn't/ran out.

Staff were generally nice, but did have a run in with one staff. Hats off to a chap who worked at Jondalup. I would have called Masters to nominate him for Staff of the Month/ or offer him a job if I could. He was a great example of what service should be: friendly, honest, cheery and very helpful - he helped brought a heavy item to my car and even helped to load it in!

A couple of annoying things are:

The inventory system was wrong and inaccurate, and calling stores was unreliable (some staff didnt even bother to go and check and flatly said no stock, but yet when I visited the store they had stock). Some even questioned how I knew their phone number.

    Inconsistency with rules
External powerpoint - Went to one store and asked the gentleman in charge of the electrical section if I could buy the last display model. Gentleman said no as they are returning stock to HPM. Later on the same day I visited another store and the gentleman in charge of the electrical section gladly sold me their last display model.
I missed out on a floor lamp because of this.

Items paid today must be collected today.
There were a few big ticket items that I wanted to buy, but had no way of getting it home on the same day (I don't have a tow bar).
I would have loved to pay the asking price and collect it another day once I've organised transport, but most stores were not keen on this idea. I assume the rule is in place just incase if there was a price drop the next day, the customer would have demanded the refund of the difference?

I wonder what were the discounts offered today?

  • Cedar was cheap.
    Paint and stain was cheap.
    Last Saturday was crapware only.
Yet when you looked on the sealed off areas there was still stock there.
Guess that must have been for staff at closure.

    • All display stock was not meant to be sold apparently.. lights, etc

  • $90 paint & primer for $20. Staff were as helpful as they could be under the circumstances, paint tinting resources were very low but they got inventive and it turned out really close to what we were looking for.

Heaps of small light bulbs and some LEDS, we go through a heap so I got about 3 years worth for $10.

I didn't have high expectations given what I had read, so everything I found was a bonus.

  • Doing up a Kitchen, picked up a brilliant sink made in Germany, retail $599 got it for $240, also some door handles plus a front door deadbolt lock 60% off, very happy

  • Any of the stores still open?

I wanted to make some deals on some of their fixtures

  • Absolutely woeful. No ill-will to the staff, but they clearly didn't have any interest in their jobs after the beginning of the end. They didn't know where to find stock, the shelves where in disarray what was there was unlabelled or mislabelled (stock got routinely moved out of aisles into the central areas making it much harder to find anything). The branded product (that wasn't shop damaged/returned/demo stock) was taken before the closing sale by suppliers, so what was left was mostly bottom shelf, house-branded or budget-priced.
Glaringly, at the start of the 'sale' many items were above the price of equivalents in Bunnings. Bear in mind, with non-returns policy, as-is stock that is likely already defective and zero warranty, the prices should arguably have been 80-90% off from the very first day.

Warranty is still availablity if the product is defective.
I bought a kitchen appliance that was missing essential parts, and I knew i was going to have trouble at store level, so I called the Masters hotline and was allowed to go instore for full refund!.

  • 3D. Disgusting, disingenuous and disappointing

the entire range of stahlwille spanners, gearwrench spanners, dremel bits, lots of maglites, those weird swisstool multitools, random keyrings, puma safety shoes, mechanix gloves, led globes, taps, plumbing spares, quite a few padlocks, solar lights, batteries for solar lights, dyson accessories, heat-shrink, a bonsai (!), jade plant, a mini cactus, garden pebbles, 2 tiny panasonic lead acid batteries, and numerous other things that i've already forgotten about.
