New monitor for brother (gaming <$250)

Hey guys.
The brother wants a new monitor for Christmas.
Looking for a 24" - 27" for gaming.
Don't need a crazy $1000 monitor so looking to spend $200-250.

What recommendations are out there.

Cheers

  • You haven't really listed too much info about what you require… How about this: http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/asus-ve248hr-24-full-h…
    Or an AOC: http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/aoc-g2460vq6-24-1ms-fr…

  • What's he currently using? I would try getting a 27" which will go a long way and much appreciate it.

Here's a list from MSY on their 27" monitors

    http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/170-monitor-size-27

  • He currently has a 21" so he is wanting to set it up with a dual monitor setup.
Budget is around the $200-250 range so if he can get a 27" within that happy days.

Im not too sure what games he plays, Dota rings a bell

    • there's a lot of 27" monitors within your budget just have a look at the link ive given you. and If he's only playing Dota, he wouldn't need the 4k monitors or the higher end ones.
But there is a lot of medium tier monitors of that size within your budget.

Every benq ive ever encountered lived 8+ years unless it was younger. Mine is 10 years atm :)

    • My brother is currently using a Benq 27" from 6 years ago and still running great!

Just be aware that there is a balance (or a compromise) between screen size and resolution. For example if you get 27in screen with only 1920x1080 resolution the picture obviously will be a bit grainy, and not be as nice as 27in with higher res. The same 1920x1080 on 24in screen would look much better. This may or may not be an issue in your case, but try to see a few monitors running in a shop before deciding.

    • Yep, came to say the same thing.
Going larger looks great from far, up close, it isn't that good quality
(high pixel density from phones and tablets have made us all picky).

There's some 1440p screens, but the industry has mostly moved on forward to 4K.
4K makes a good improvement in density when you sit so close to the screen, even if its for everything besides gaming.

Not to mention Ultrawide (21:9) screens in stead of dual monitor setups.
However, some games/programs don't scale very well to it.

So if he really wants an increase in quality (resolution, width, refresh rate) you're going to pay extra.

      • but the industry has mostly moved on forward to 4K.

Almost all PC gamers are using 1920x1080 still. Why are you spouting rubbish about 4K?

Because it's the truth, and you don't know everything?

I'm saying the industry is moving to/has moved to 4K.
          It is mainstream now.
See Windows 10's scaling in 4K for instance.

"the industry" does not mean simply games.
I even made the effort to point that out "even if its for everything BESIDES gaming".
Although, an argument could be made about 4K gaming when we factor in the:
          - Xbox Scorpio
          - PS4 Pro
          - and graphics cards that are more powerful than a GTX 970/RX 470

    • Thanks for calling that out Derek.

So for example the 27" viewsonic linked above has a max resolution of 1920*1080.
Would there be any other 27" monitors with a higher resolution for the same price or is it now deciding between 27" with that resolution or a 24" with a higher resolution (and if so any recommendations for a decent 24"

      • You're welcome :)
I can't think about any other 27" with higher res within this price range. Myself I would much rather go with a smaller 24" and a reputable brand. BenQ mentioned before is good, other brands I trust (in no particular order) are: Samsung, LG (many manufacturers put LG panels in their monitors), Asus, Viewsonic. I would avoid Acer, AOC (just my opinion), and a few other lesser known brands.

Finally, my personal choice for 24" below $250 would be Dell E2417H. It comes with second to none warranty: premium panel guarantee and 3-year Advanced Exchange (check Dell site for details). Full price is $249, but street price is hovering around $200.

To stress again: these are just my personal opinions and preferences, obviously some people may disagree.

  • Thanks so much for your help guys.

Let me have a chat with my brother to see if he wants 24 or 27
I bet I already know what one

  • 100% go with 27 inch. I've had a kogan branded one for about 2 years hasn't skipped a beat and was cheap. Was the older version of this one: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-27-led-monitor-sc/

      Yup ordered the 27" Viewsonic.

      Cheers everyone

      • FYI it's now $229
