Looking for a New Air Conditioner - NSW

Hi guys,

After a few day enduring the hot weather of 35+ degree….I have decided to buy an air conditioner since it was too hot to sleep these few days. I am just wondering if anyone know a deal on air conditioner?

I heard there are 3 types of air conditioner - split, window and portable.

Lots of review said Split is the most energy efficient so I am thinking of going that way. This will be installing in my bedroom so I think maybe 2.5 - 4 KW is sufficient.

Please let me know if you find any deal for this. Thank you very much for your help.

  • How much are you prepared to spend? are you in Sydney?

    • Hey, had a chat with in laws and they decided to install ducted air con for the whole house. I checked around and apparently it costs around 7k for a 12.5 kw cooling / 14kw heating.

This is from teknicooling. I noticed they have a good rating on Google so at least that's a peace of mind.

Also, I am from Sydney. Just wondering if 7.7k for ducted air con with 6-8 outlets and 2 zones (Daikin brand) are reasonable price?

Still doing more researches to see if it is a reasonable price

  • I had a similar journey and did the same sort of research as you and your Outlaws. I finally decided that the only places that I needed heat/cooling, for comfort sake, was the "living/dining room" and the "master bedroom".

I discarded the idea of a ducted-system, because of the power required to run these systems and the loss of energy in the transportation of the treated air from the compressor to the outlet.
The problems are: initial cost of the unit (more powerful and power hungry compressor unit and installation of the insulated ducting, ongoing power cost associated with this type of system and the vulnerability of all air-con going down if the main unit fails.
So, basically you are using a 12.5/14kW compressor to inefficiently cool one, two, or three rooms that are being used at any one time.

I decided to go with two smaller units and considering that a major part of the installation….is "the installation", I looked for a specialist air-con company to supply and instal and then I began to "negotiate".

I finished up with two Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 3.5/4.2 units installed to Australian Standard on cushioned brackets at either end of the house. These units make less noise than my Westinghouse refrigerator (much less!) and have been operating without fault since the end of 2009 (7 years) without a single problem or service…just cleaning the nylon filters a couple of times a year…10 minutes!

They are still extremely efficient and the Missus still complains that the settings are too cold in the summer and cranks the living room unit up to 25 degrees in the winter.
Thanks to Kevin 07, I had the roof insulated shortly before the air-con installation and even on 38 plus days I don't have to switch the the living room unit on until noon and the bedroom unit about ten minutes before retiring.

The neighbor has Daikin units, which are purported to be "the quietest" of all , but no appreciable noise difference to the Mitsubishi's for these similar sized units, as far as I can gauge.

Now, the real benefit is through all this time, parties with doors open, family gatherings hot and cold days and having reasonable comfort over the 7 year period I can see no more than a 2% increase in power usage for these units and the possible cost increase, since the installation, has been more than made up, with "deals" made with the my Power Supplier.

Can't really help with the costing. because my research was done seven years ago (both units supply and install…$2835, after discounts) but if you require the name of this Sydney supplier, who I would recommend without reserve, I will advise.

Hope some of above ramblings helps….Good luck!
