    Lol, like it will happen

    • +2

This will happen within 15 days unless there is a stay for an appeal, which seems highly unlikely.
The coalition government amended the law last year to make this kind of blocking more straight forward for rights holders.
Given the sites involved, I expect the easiest way to block them will be via DNS, so select an non-AU DNS server and you will be fine.

In any case, I thought TPB was a FBI honeypot now? Or was that just speculation?

Which VPN will you now use?

Who wants to know… -shifty eyes-

Lol only blocks browsing, not magnet links and the download itself

    Lol @ this:

Some enterprising internet users have found ways to get around site-blocking laws by using a VPN, which hides the user's country of origin.

But Mr Burke was confident this approach would not be popular in Australia.

"The experience overseas is not many people use VPNs because they cost money as well," he said.

Politicians are usually clueless idiots saying what someone else told them to. Probably the parties that paid them to get this legislation through.

      • +3

The rights holders like Foxtel/Village do make political donations, and they are able to fund court cases.
The politicians don't want to piss off mums and dads too much, but most people admit it is pretty easy to pirate and acknowledge it is an infringement, so I don't think there will be a massive backlash.
The ISPs know it is a hassle for their users, so they have fought the administrative burden - making it only worth blocking the big sites for the rights holders.
Most politicians probably want it to all go away as they are caught between conflicting views.

It is worth remembering that Australia loses hundreds of millions of dollars from our economy each year to overseas content creators. We spend much more than the few Aussie creators earn.
It can be argued there is a moral case to recompense creators, but paying them for their lifetimes plus 70 years for a once off work is an absurd example of regulatory capture.

      • Any chance it was intended to be informative, it does seem a bit of a strange statement.

    Nice try ASIO.

Its funny because so many people I heard of already had a VPN due to Netflix having shows based on region. Probably won't stop piracy but its always good to see that it will make people more safety conscious online by making them get a VPN.

If only that much time, effort and money was used to get media in Australia at a competitive cost and a respectable time frame.

never heard of solarmovie, but have now. they should block more sites. it'll make it easier for aussies to find the less unknown ones.

VPNs are not illegal, so happy to make a recommendation. ExpressVPN. Added bonus is I can pay using my Telstra credit via Google play

  • I'll believe it when it happens, if ever.
The article is very biased and hard to take seriously.

42% of internet users just downgraded their isp plans.

Who on earth uses those sites anyway? You're asking to get fined or go to jail if you use public trackers.

Use private torrent sites and trackers.

    OR USENET

    • +1

Eh I don't do anything and I am fine

  • Another great move from politicians who understand sod all about the average Australian.

  • Merged from torrent sites to be banned..

so the torrent sites to be banned in next 2 weeks in australia.what are the options to browse them except VPN.Will people stop doing piracy.whats your take.what are the sites going to be banned, and what are the alternatives.do you guys agree with court decision.

    • Doesn't make as much difference now, international law enforcement has been quite active and raided/shut down a lot of the great trackers during this last month

      https://torrentfreak.com/what-cd-shuts-down-following-report…

      • Last month? Well I for one haven't noticed a difference.
        Torrents still work fine, chump.

        • Torrents as a protocol still work, yes. Most of the better private trackers, are being targeted and shut down.

    • Already a thread about this.

Do I agree? No, I feel there are more important things to worry about. All media industries are booming more than ever.
Piracy doesn't impact the industry, and most people who download things for free end up paying for things that they enjoy. (I remember seeing a survey)
Other countries can browse torrent sites, if we can't then it just lowers the value of our country's freedoms.

I'm sure there will be a way around any proposed blocks, this won't affect people pirating, it will maybe only make life slightly inconvenient for some people.

  • I think the biggest mistake for movie studios was hiring lawyers to try stop pirating " the lawyers must be making a fortune " they should have worked out a digital distribution method way back then, sure we have netflix etc now but instead they went down the road with lets punish our customers for copyright violations.
As a lot of movie releases are around the same time in various country's now , so perhaps after a month or 2 of the release do a digital download for less than a movie ticket or do a digital download with the option of a discount on the Blu-ray/dvd release.

Anyway i use Private Internet Access for my vpn " my first week on it " havent noticed any real slow down " i am on cable though " , its $39.99 Usd for a year , good price for me as i did try the newsgroup method which was more expensive even though i was with Frugal ….. but saying that i only ditched newsgroup as i was looking for really old tv shows.

  • Ill stop torrenting when the government fixes the ancient laws of licensing in australia.

    Example.

Foxtel has the license right to show got and walking dead in australia, this means no othwr streaming service can play it or even free to air tv.

There are a lot of other shows on netflix usa that can not be passed down to the aus version due to this 1 owner license.
