Boarding Plane without Getting Name Checked

Has anyone boarded a plane before without getting their ID checked against the boarding pass?

I've seen people purchase really cheap flights on ebay and use it to board the plane even though its not their name.

Wonder whether anyones done this before?

Cheers

  • I have not shown my I.D since online check-in was introduced.

It is a bit silly in Australia, since anyone just has to get scanned without showing ID before getting to the lounge. At least in the US they only let people though to the lounges with a boarding pass after it is checked against their ID.

    • In the UK even if checked in online security will always check your boarding pass against your passport. However, the last time I flew domestic in Australia in February there was no check of the name on my boarding pass against any form of identification.

  • That happened to my father, he accidentally boarded the wrong plane after passing the all checks.. They scanned his boarding pass, the cabin crew checked it.. it wasn't until there was confusion over the seating that the cabin crew (and him) realised he was on the wrong flight.

You would think that scanning the boarding pass would have shown him to be on the wrong flight!

    • Australian airports are a joke… poor food options (and expensive), always under construction (well at least Sydney), and the security measures are a bloody joke, they don't check id and anyone can get to the terminal (for domestic and at least for Sydney)

      • Agree that the security is inconsistent and lacking coompared to security in some poorer countries.
eg. Anyone can nick my bags from pickup area and walk off. In India security have checked the tags on bags carried against those on ticket stubs for decades as you leave the domestic terminal.
It was domestic flights that caused 9/11 right? So why the difference b/w domestic and international security? …and that's just the obvious stuff we customers see.

  • Got back from Queensland with online check in without anyone verifying identity. Still, it'd be a bit of a gamble to make if you were to travel under the wrong name - you just happen to get someone who does check and you might be stranded somewhere.

  • I take qantas and although they dont check the photo id to you, you still need a valid id for the scanner to scan?

  • I have travelled with qantas a bit recently, and only once they asked for photo ID (which was in a smaller aiport).

  • Sounds like local nightclubs I've visted have stricter photo ID checks than airports/airlines? Hmmm…

  • HI, I travel all the time domestic - mostly virgin. With web check and carry-on baggage I have never been asked for ID - 100+ flights. This said - there is a very good reason for not flying under someone elses name. The passenger manifest and seating assignments are used to identify people and subsequently notify relatives in the event of an accident…..If you are going to fly under another name make sure someone knows your flight details and the name you are using. Also it may just be illegal…couldn't find any info on that one.

  • Tiger still check your ID (@ the gate) against your boarding pass. (even after web checkin). They say it's for "security", but it's their financial security - stops people reselling cheap seats. Jetstar, Virgin & Qantas generally don't. (in theory they can, but I'm yet to see it).
