Need Help Figuring out My Credit Report?

I migrated to AU on 2007.

In that time, I've had a mobile on a contract (Voda) & paid it off.

I also had a Toyota car loan. Was in a MVA which totaled it before the end of the loan, so loan was paid off by insurance.

I just got my free Veda credit report, & there's nothing on it? All it shows is:

Other
Other Access
Date Note
19 Dec 2016 YC & I (today's date so assume this is nothing)
21 Jun 2015 NAT TENANCY DATABASE - Public Record Access Only (this is when we applied for a new rental- where we are now)

It also only shows me as having one employer (who I was with 2008-2010, yet when I took another position at another retail chain, 2010- 2011, that's not listed)?

Not being from AU, I'm not full-bottle on this, but shouldn't that other stuff be on it?

Ta, for any insights. :)

Limited content is a good thing!

Just apply for a loan knowing a poor Credit Report wont be slowing you down.

    • Yes, but it's also not showing ALL of the many on-time payments I DID make. That was the reason for the mobile plan & buying the car on-time, to establish credit!

Ffs…even when you do it right, it's wrong. :P

      • I think Aus is only now moving to a more "positive" system, where on-time payments, etc, actually mean something. Has historically been a negative system, where only queries/credit defaults show up.

      • This is not my understanding of how the Australian Credit system works.

I was able to borrow $500k+ never owning a credit card, never being on phone plan and never taking a personal or car loan.

Sounds like your methodology is following the USA Credit System.

        • A couple of years ago, I tried to get a microwave at HN & was kicked back for "no credit history". Pretty sure HN is in AU.

        • @Geekomatic: Dude you really shouldn't be buying a Microwave on Credit….

        • @Geekomatic:

Both examples are plausible. Lending institutions use a variety of factors in calculating your risk profile. Not having a credit file won't necessarily hurt you, and even if it does hurt, it may not be enough to result in a declined application over all. On the other hand, lack of a credit history may be the "straw that breaks the camel's back", and tip the decision against you.

Another thing worth noting is the type of loan in each example. The mortgage would have the property as collateral, easily sellable, whereas the microwave loan would essentially have no collateral.

  • I am no expert, but it may be that the other checks were done by different credit agencies, maybe you'll find out more if you get a credit report from:
    Dun & Bradstreet : https://www.checkyourcredit.com.au
    Experian : http://www.experian.com.au/credit-services/credit-reports/or…

(I haven't got one from experian, but presumably its the same process)

I also had out of date address and employer info, they have a form you can fill in and get things updated on. Whether or not it has any impact on anything I do not really know, but at least you then get a credit report with the correct info)

    • Thanks for that. I've just sent them off. We'll see what happens.

It's not as if I'm in need atm, of a loan or such, I just don't want any surprises should something arise.

      Ta,

      :)

    • Great advice.

      Here are some other possibilities:
      * Vodafone and Toyota made no credit file enquiries when you applied for credit with them. After all, they don't have to make a search on your credit file when deciding whether to give you credit.
      * The credit enquiries you made were long enough ago that they have been added and since been removed from your credit file, as required under Australian law.
      * The credit enquiries were added to your file, but perhaps someone made a typo (or you accidentally gave wrong details) and it's under a different name or address. Credit bureaux try to fix this kind of error, but it's not always foolproof.

Your credit report is only updated if somebody enters new data.
So all the other on-time payments you made to other companies would not show up unless you skipped payments - then they might list your defaults.
So - no news is good news.
And as for your address, it was correct at the time of data entry, but since you moved, no one has had reason to add anything.

    • Then not sure why they ask for my previous addresses if not to try to use it to find credit data?

@Gunther— I needed a decent convection-micro & wanted to try to get it on credit to start a history in AU. What's NOT to get?

      • Who is asking for your previous address ?

Your credit report is only a list of enquiries and from whomever. Not all credit providers make an enquiry into your credit report. And only defaults would be listed if you skip town.
And a CR isn't a list of previous addresses either. Perhaps the Nat Rental Tenancy Database has this list and has nothing to do with your credit file. You have to be an industry member to access the NRT DB - usually Real Estate agencies.

        • When you fill out the "get free credit report" form online, they ASK for your previous addresses.

  • @Geekomatic: Were you able to figure out the source behind the YC & I entries? I have them on my report too, and have no idea what they are. Cheers.

    • I believe it's: "your credit & identity". It's them accessing your data (the date ought to be recent if it's just come through to you).

      ;)

      • Many thanks. That makes sense. All my google-fu turned up nothing.

I had my identify stolen last year, so am a bit paranoid about anything unexpected on my credit report. Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

        -Anders, Sydney.

        • You're very welcome. It's about the only thing I understand about the report- lol.

The US keeps your report as a history. My AU, now from 3 credit sites, only shows my Vodafone account I paid off— yet NOT my Toyota?

          Clear as the Mississippi mud.

          Hope your holiday is wonderful!

          ;)
